another annoying "what car" thread

been chatting with my father today and both my parents need new cars. current cars are a Jag x-type, and a BMW 3 series touring, and I've been told my suggestions aren't helpful 
so we need the help of the PH masses 
Car 1, for my father - must be a comfortable GT car, sporty, capable of easily doing 30K a year (and therefore not too horrendous on fuel) budget = £10,000
Car 2, for my mother - must be 4 wheel drive, must be able to tow a horse trailer, ideally diesel, ideally SUV, take dogs, 40MPG+, budget = £10,000
Both cars have to be good marques i.e. no dacia dusters please.
couple of things they both said, they don't want anything Asian, unless is a Mitsubishi shogun sort for the mother. Father has decided he defiantly does not want a porsche.
Also, the budgets have to stay fairly even, 10k a piece, rather than say 15k for one, 5k for the other if you see what i mean.

2004 Volvo XC90 D5 SE with 73k miles.Private seller, £9,800
The latter won't average 40mpg+, but at 30k mpa the former will exceed it sufficiently without much trouble. As "not too horrendous" to me is ~30mpg, then the overall fuel bill for both of them should be acceptable.
