Thinking about building a track car next year after a recent trip to the 'Ring in my Scooby. I'd like to build something I can drive without as much fear of something happening to it.

I was thinking along the lines of an E36 328i Sport but then noticed E46 328's and 330's are available for sub £2k and thought one of those could be an interesting option. Anybody got any opinions/experience along these lines?

I'm not sure, but if you you go for a 328 i wouldn't bother paying the premium for a sport if you're going to track it, as you'd be changing the suspension (I'm guessing anyway).

Unless you get a pre-facelift sport anyway - as these have an LSD. But even then an LSD isn't that much.

E46 is much the same car underneath, but the whole thing is much heavier overall. Eat through front lower track arms in particular, but also the brakes will be less effective, and so of course will any given engine power. I'd go E36 every time wink

There's an E36 M3 evo 'vert (ok, not the best track car....) up for £3.5k near me... you can get one fast cra for very little dosh in an E36 wink
