It's big money yes, but there are plates which have changed hands and been bought at a lot more than that.

X 1 is being sold at the moment by auction and it'll be interesting to see what that sells for.

I read somewhere that filthy rich people were buying them as gifts to avoid tax implications on making a straight cash gift. Also, they tend to hold their value well/increase in value so it makes sense as a sound investment.

I just checked the prices of the "0" series previously sold. A nice little earner for HM government!!

And don't forget this list of prices is BEFORE charges and VAT which add 30% above these figures...

Iirc there's been plenty of plates that have sold for more than £70k.

Roger Clarke Motorsport have 3R on their transport van. I've seen 1U on a 5 series, both would've been well into the £100k +.

MR 51NGH is/was on a rolls - royce phantom, which I heard was more valuable than the car...

Personally I wouldn't spend that kind of money I couldn't live in.

what wording or guarantees do DVLA use when selling one of these numbers?

Say a new government came in and changed the system entirely, or simply introduced a free choice of plates (not likely, with this big earner for them, but still)

The plate S 1 sold for just over £400k. It's reckoned the plate A 1 could reach £1m if it came to market.

I love none dating plates, but even I'm starting to feel that they just ain't what they used to be.

Unfortunately the dvla keep releasing new numbers devaluing the true old historic numbers.

Heard all sorts of rumours about A1, one being the current owner was offered £5m. Plate is not for sale. (Or wasnt).

The chap who owns it is unlikely to ever need the money. I beleive he also own 1A but has never put it on a car! If that the case, thats just wrong!

If the owner of the Morris 1000 with the infamous number "1 AN" could transfer the plate he would get alot more than £71,350........but he can't so it just sit's on his Moggy.!
