Which lens next?

I bought my Nikon D7000 with a kit lens, which is a AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED.
I've since bought a AF-S Nikkor 12-24mm 1:4 G ED and a AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G ED
Now tell me if I'm imagining it, but it feels to me like the two I've bought are of a superior quality to the original kit lens. The images seem sharper and the lenses are both heavier (I don't know if that's a good indication?)
So my question is, are they, and if so what would you suggest would be a good lens to replace the kit lens with to get a similar level of quality to my new ones, and effectively plug the gap between them?

Get's suggested a great lens but if you're planning a move to FX format it won't deliver as well if you take it with you. The AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 is the FX equiv of the lens suggested above- you'll need to save harder.
Or look at getting a couple of primes which, although you'll lose out in zoom flexibility, give you light-gathering and DoF options.
You could pick up used copies of the AF-D 35mm f/2 *and* the AF-S 50mm f/1.4 and still have change from £500.

If you're happy with G-type lenses (which you seem to be), then one lens you might consider is the latest, f/4 version of the 24-120mm
You get close up at 450mm throughout range, VRII, 9-blade diaphragm, ED and nano coating ..... I'd definitely give it a look, especially if you might go FX at some point in the future....

I've been looking at the specs on these for myself - but, of course, it's probably a bit too modern and too zoomy for me.... (and more importantly, I've just got all my aperture rings back and the one G-type in my bag is already an annoyance!)K12beano said:

Prob a bit too new to get second-hand I'm guessing?
The 24-120 F4 is a good shout especially if you are going soemwhere and only want to take one lens.
The choice between the 17-55 and 24-70 is really down to your style of photography not forgetting that the 24-70 will work on FX bodies too. For that reason the 17-55 loses value quicker in the second hand market....you should be able to buy one for £600 or so second hand whilst a seocond hand 24-70 will cost £900. Those are prices bought off forums not dealers. The classifieds on Talk Photography is excellent for buying camera gear....you need a minimum post count though to have access to the classifieds.
