The original Chim fans ( http://www.thetvrshop.com/ProductsDetail.asp?PartN... K0072& ) are listed as no longer available and they're given as the replacement but they're over twice the price (and from what I can tell almost three times the curent draw) so I was wondering if anyone knew exactly which SPAL part number they are so I can check my fan feed is up to the job (it's not the standard otter switched feed).

Phil

Cheers Simon - looks like a decent alternative supplier.

Still need to find out what model fan that one is that Racing Green are recommending though so I can see if they draw much more than the old fans - have dropped them an email for the specs.

The tall guy at RG cars was telling me about these fans, the are SPAL fans but unlike the sercks ones they are 3 wires. The 3rd wire is for an speed regulator input that is generated by SYVECS, the hotter the engine gets the faster the fans run and it is the fan itself that determines its totally variable speed based on the changing inputs from SYVECS. The Fans consume 40amps of power on full chat so a powerful relay is used to supply that power once the ignition is switch on. He also said they were designing a separate control system that was going to be available for non syvecs cars that would have 3 fans speed settings that were dependant on engine temp together with an override switch for those that fancy just keeping the engine cooler and the aircon working better

That Griff / Chim one on RG looks like it's "only" a two core supply cable on the product photo (and the Grif / Chim wouldn't be able to use a three core one) ... 40 amps for a single fan is one *HELL* of a current draw for a low voltage speed controller (which would have to be built in to the fan motor housing) to handle though - my gut feeling is that "the tall guy" might have been a bit confused between these and the innards of his PC. biggrin

If you read my comments again you will see that I said the fan direct from spal will control its own speed depend on the signal from the controller not the current from it...sorry if I did not make that clear

Just a thought and not sure why you need new fans, but when the fan packed up in my daily driver, rather than spending £300 on a new one, I found somewhere that made up new brushes for me as the fan motor had failed as the old brushes had worn out, £40 for four new ones and an easy diy fix.

This has helped me understand it (well at least a little bit)
