996 GT2 build thread
Discussion
Well after a couple of wonderful years on road and track it's now time to turn the car into a dedicated track beast.
I'm sure it will take a good few months to get there and a lot to do but really looking forward to the end result.
So what's next (in no particular order):
. Full race roll cage and a lot of stiffening and strengthening
. Massive diet - Perspex windows, loss of all extras ie/ door cards, glass, carpets, sound deadening, air con, etc etc
. More power - bigger intercoolers, turbos etc
. Some good data logging equipment and maybe a motec m800 or similar ecu
. Aero touches - diffusers etc
. Cooling and venting - lots to think about
Will try and keep a reasonably decent record of the build over the forthcoming months without it getting stupidly boring ie/ a new bolt has been sourced.
Looking forward to working with Ken at Nine Excellence and am sure it will be a very rapid, exciting beast when competed

I'm never one to try and dissuade anyone from a project but if that's your route think very hard about selling up and buying a cup instead.
It will be safer, it will save you a ton of money over a build and you won't lose a whack on resale.
Expectations of a cup are only one thing so having used it on track doesn't kill it's value and it's being eligible for racing ensures a market for it.
If you are still keen to build then think very carefully about how you do it. If you make a car that's eligible for a race series you increase your options should you want a change in vehicle at some point.

Hi TA, the standard Motronic ECU is a superb piece of equipment if you've got someone that knows their way round it. Ruf and RS tuning have both built and run big horsepower conversions on it. I'm sure it will take a good few months to get there and a lot to do but really looking forward to the end result.

As Neil says, think very carefully before you start throwing huge amounts of money at a project such as this, and don't fall into the mistake of buying stuff because it's got a high "bling factor". Motec falls into this category IMO.
Good luck with the project, whatever you do with it !

Thanks both and fully understand everything you have said.
Being honest selling it and picking up an ex cup would make sense but I don't intend to sell and love the character of the car and it would be a very personal track car.
I have a spare Motec M800 from one of the drag cars and just love the capability, flexibility etc.
As said not looking to flood this overnight with bottomless amounts of cash, happy for it to take shape over months to come.
Really it's just a little labour of love project to improve and focus something that's great already

So the work has started - carpets & sound deadening being removed as i type - no going back now
The list of parts to order has started in earnest & in no particular order:
1. http://www.lexan-windows.com/window-kits-windscree...
Full set of polycarb windows all round + rear & front screens
2. Next is removal of the dash & all interior trim
Have ordered some flat sheet carbon for the door cards & other areas that will need covering.
Have ordered a fairly generic carbon dash & console that will be installed after the roll cage has been installed so it can be cut to look nice & tidy around the cage - gives you an idea here
http://www.fluke-motorsport.co.uk/universal-all-pu...
3. Seats - looking at a set of these
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Racetech-119-Series-Fibr...
4,. Cage - will be completed by Andy Robinson race cars - Andy has huge experience in building quality roll cages for some fairly extreme applications & sits on the MSA technical commitee so knows his stuff
http://www.robinson-race-cars.co.uk/
Will post up some pics as things start to happen in earnest

think very hard about the front screen choice.
i assume you havent had lexan windows anywhere on a car yet if you are considering running with this for a windscreen? they scratch up easily. the front screen on a track car gets a ton of punishment due to rubber and gravel/stones on track. lexan here ends up pitted very quickly.
as a result you will be endlessly having tearoffs fitted to try and get some life from it and even still you will be regularly replacing screens. any driving in the wet and it will be toast from using the wipers, if you even get that far after it fogs badly.
fwiw a lexan screen isnt street legal either which may or may not impact your decision.
theres much better ways to save weight imho.
ref the dash. once you get the car stripped out and lift out the actual dashboard itself its not especially heavy. its all the other BS that adds weight in. just keep the dash, it will save your car looking ghetto
bin the airbag, change your steering wheel if you still have the airbag one, bin the stereo, take out the speakers, remove the glovebox etc etc. thats where you drop weight quickly and effectively in that area.
if you ran OMP HTE carbon seats instead of those racetech units you would prob gain back the weight savings you would have had from doing the dash.

Many thanks for the feedback & i have had a lexan screen in the drag car for years now without any hassles but yes no wipers fitted & you are probably spot on - i dont fancy a race team type budget in terms of replacing it every 5 mins - will definitely do the rear screen + sides though.
Dash - im going to scrap & fit the carbon version - hopefully it wont look to ghetto
Reality is that the cage install would mean cutting the original dash around a fair bit anyway and by the time things had been removed (ie all clocks etc as fitting a stack dash or similar) would look a bit tired - would much prefer a nice clean start. Stereo etc etc all going as part of the weight reduction exercise & i've not eaten a mars bar today either which must help

If you are using a motec ecu then have a look at their dash. CDL is their entry level without data logging (though it can be expanded to log). SDL is the bigger logging version.
Combining the two will get you good data.
If you aren't running motec look at the AIM Pista. Default info will depend on your ecu choice but adding extra sensors if needed is simple enough. The GPS integration is very nice though.
Nice one on the mars bar cut out. It needs to be a wholistic approach of you want to succeed
