Boaty question

Hello all - quick question for the boaty types on here if I may.
GF and I spent the weekend cleaning our new purchase (Mirage 28 yacht), and while poking around below decks, I've found something that I have no understanding of.
Briefly, it's a round red and silver 'control', about the size of a smoke detector, with the numbers '0', '1', '1+2', '2' at the cardinal points and a black dial (with a large letter 'W' on it) that can be switched between these positions.
I guess it's something to do with the engine, as it's on the transom above the steps, where the engine is located.
Any ideas??

re: YBW forum, the first response you would probably get is a terse telling off for thinking about using a bout and not knowing what an isolator is. They can be a little stuffy.
If you even consider sailing a boat larger than 25ft some of them would consider you as a Playboy / more money than sense !

I do have one question actually: The boat has two jib sheet cars per side. I've never seen this before, and I'm wondering if it's simply to allow for double jib sheets, or if one set is for the spinnaker, and one for jib (though as you'd never have both up at the same time, that doesn't really make sense). It's roller reefing jib setup.

Yep, makes sense I guess. I have twin gib tracks, one set as far inboard as possible to help with upwind pointing.Whilst you might not have both out at the same time, it would allow you to be rigged for the Spin' with the sheets out etc for when you change one for the other.

You normally fly a spin from a lot further aft and use tweakers / barberhaulers closer to midships.
As others have said, a lot of the sailing specific forums have a carbon fiber spin pole choked a long way up their arses, for yachts stuff it's usually sailing anarchy or ironically here!
Eta - one jib track a side and 2 cars is for sail changes if you don't have a roller furler.

I would be tempted to agree with P&M, but if they are on the tracks, they would be too far inboard to be effective as spinnaker sheets (and also too far forward - normally, if you're running a conventional spinnaker with lazy sheets & guys, the sheets would be fed to a block right on the toerail by the transom & the guys would be fed to a block right on the toerail by the shrouds).
Clearly, the amount of headsail unfurled will dictate where the cars should be on the track, but there should be no need for two cars on each side, as you can easily adjust the position of a single car.
It may be that the previous owner put the second (rearward) cars on to feed the headsail sheet through to change the lead on to the primary winch. In which case, I would imagine he left them somewhere near the rear of the track.
Other than that, I really can't see a reason why you would want 2 cars on each track.
