Hi there,i hope someone can help!!!!
I have an 03'plate vw bora pd150, now done 105k, for the last 20k the engine has sounded like a box of spanners, heavy knocking/tapping/slapping sound and uneven idle but not serious. this car has given me nothing but grief, worst car i have ever owned with regard to faults, the forums seem to suggest tappit failure and or camshaft, could this be possible. in the 12months ive owned the car, injector harness has failed, turbo has failed(blown)and various other small issues, and know am using a litre of oil every 4-5 weeks.
any views would be great, sadly cant afford to drive over a cliff so thats off the cards for now.

I think you probably should have done something about 20k miles ago.

The PD150's were renown for having soft cams that wore very prematurely.

Carrying on driving the car for 20k miles with the engine sounding that bad has likely scrapped it.

Indeed, you can't blast a car as being unreliable and rubbish if you have failed to do even the most basic of maintenance.

I dare say any engine that has been used for 20k whilst "sounding like a bag of spanners" is not going to be that healthy.

First port of call is getting the car on VAGCOM to see how many fault codes there are, then get the oil pressure & HG/coolant system checked, then you might be in a position to determine what needs doing.

when i bought the car about 11 months ago(89k ish)the engine sounded fine, i changed the oil/filter a few hundred miles later with Comma pd engine oil, vw505 spec then a week or so later there was a slight tapping and a engine judder appeared at idle, hooked car upto vagcom and adjusted the cam pulley and the judder better. Tapping preceded to get worse and i was about to investigate and repair when all of a sudden the turbo destroyed itself at 96k and i had to repair that at great cost and had to leave the camshaft as couldnt afford to fix both at the time. now the noise is getting so bad that its embarrasing to drive and the car is using a lot of oil and im not sure wether the engine is worth fixing.
