BMW 760Li 25 Years Edition

It's party time in Bavaria, though in a suitably restrained manner

Great minds clearly think alike. Just as PH chose to celebrate BMW V12s with this 850i, so BMW is congratulating itself on a quarter-century of putting V12s in its production cars.

It has chosen to mark this anniversary with a limited edition of its current 760Li flagship, called the 25 Years Edition. As a celebration of V12s in its production cars (beginning with the original E32 7 Series), wouldn't it be right to have some engine tweaks for this 760Li? Apparently not, according to BMW, with this car merely a styling exercise.

Having said that, with 535hp and 550lb ft of torque, the 6.0-litre powerplant wasn't exactly wanting for performance. The cosmetic tweaks for the 25 Years Edition include new badges, 'champagne piping' (we kid you not) for the upholstery, 20-inch wheels from the BMW Individual range and a rear-seat entertainment package with its own iDrive.

Perhaps understandably given the British fondness for luxury diesels, the 760Li 25 Years Edition will only be available in America. Moreover, just 15 will be made. It is available to order now at $159,695 (just about £100,000), with the 15 buyers likely to receive their cars in early 2013.

Of course, if you wish to celebrate BMW's milestone but don't have the requisite £100k for a 25 Years Edition, how about perusing the PH Classifieds for your own 12-cylinder saloon? No, they aren't common, but £16,000 secures you a very appealing previous-generation 760Li and an E38 750iL can be yours for under £5k

I quite like those wheels... I'll get my coat.

Seems silly not to do 25 of them though...

Don't forget the pic isn't of the actual car, as the caption reminds us.

Shame it's just a styling exercise.

BMW seem to be doing a lot of this lately - all those random M3 editions 'frozen', 'matt black' etc. Not very impressive imo.

What they do genuinely seem to be missing is the E92's V8 in the Z4. Now that would be proper.

Yep, another BMW 'Special Edition' with a special 'plaque' and a few options list boxes tick'd..... and no doubt a massively inflated price.

I'm looking forward to their announcement of a Limited Edition model to celebrate the 50 years since they stopped making the Isetta 300 bubble car.

Other than the obvious 'because it's a 12 init it' response, is there any other reason for wanting a 12 over an 8? What does the 12 offer that the 8 does not?

Yes - they've announced that they aren't making 15 limited edition Bubble cars to celebrate this fact.

The current range of big BMW's (5, 7's) just look so 'unfinished' for luxury cars.
Like the owner ran out of money on the interior/exterior trim options.

Together with the typically awful 'orange peel' BMW paintwork, they just look cheap.
And they most certainly are not.

Compare and contrast with the delightful detailing which Jaguar currently have on their automotive portfolio.

Just a thought.

There is a rather large XJ L parked outside our office currently. I'd call it imposing, but delightfully detailed? Not in the slightest. It would appears Land Rover's attempts to lose all sense of taste and decency have spilled over to the Jag side of the factory too.

I have seen some that have stunning paint, and others that look like it is applied with a roller, one of the bosses here had a five series and that was liek that, he wasnt bothered as it was a 520d with the M garnish.

I see the orange peel effect on cars from most manufacturers. All appear to produce variable finish quality. Our (recently stolen) X5 had a fantastic paint finish.

AC Schnitzer did a V8 Z3 Roadster which was quite tasty iirc.
