hopefully the right forum for this?

I've been buying a few paintings for a while now - ones I like and some have a chance of being worth about the same or even more in years to come.

However, I'm now thinking of this as a practical investment option - anyone else on here do it, have any advice?

Hey, small world. I know nothing about paintings or art but have just had a good kicking in the 'Pensions Question' thread because I believe if well chosen then hard assets will, for the foreseeable, out perform financial products by a multiple, particularly pensions.
Have a read, someone will be very wrong!
Colin.

I buy art as well. Sometimes from art school shows or small exhibitions. Sometimes on the back of insightful comments about a 'new' artist's potential. But as an investment it seems like most other assets. There are those who really do have an insightful knowledge of 'investment art' and there are those who (like me) just buy something very primarily because they like it and very secondarily hope one day it might have added value.

As to 'outperforming pensions' well, it wouldn't be hard, would it? Having said that, serious recent press commentary seems to indicate The End for the 'pension' as we know it. And you certainly can't hang a pension on the wall and get much from it. Nor will someone come and steal a painting from your descendants when you're dead because, after all, you HAVE had years of pleasure from it, haven't you?

I've dabbled over the years. I tend to stick to originals rather then limited edition prints.

I always by something I like rather than as a pure investment. If it increases in value to others then great, if not I still have something of value to me.

You can hold art in a pension.
