Travelling into Barcelona next week to a city centre hotel and have now discovered that the hotel has no parking, reading further on the web it seems a number of people have had a bad experience with robberies, pick pockets, car held up etc So, are we asking for it, in British plated car, just a bit concerned but is this concern justified?

Mark.

In our experience none of it is justified. Barcelona is one of my favourite cities and we found the people wonderfully friendly.
Like any major city, be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine.

Yes it´s safe to drive into, but parking in the centre is quite expensive, so you´ll need to find a place to park as streets are permit parking.
Paco Meralgo is the best tapas restaurant ever!!!! (I just moved back from BCN and it´s a wonderful place!!)

Ok thanks, thats a couple of positive comments, just the web portrays Barcelona in a poor way for muggings and scams, being careful is one thing but the car will make us quite obvious. Thinking about this more we might consider parking at the airport, Cheers

Pickpocketing is quite common in Barcelona. Your idea of parking at the airport is probably a good one, saves a bit of hassle and the public transport is pretty good anyway.

Barcelona, full of streets with cars flying through, and no parking. Not no parking spaces, no frigging parking. Spanish NCP's everywhere, forget the street.
Terrific city, brilliant airport, and racetrack. Sat navs essential, the roads are infathomable. Spent hours negotiating it once, only to end up at the port, sea, not air. Spanish roads, especially mways, are not intuitive in the uk way, so sat nav it deffo.

May be safe but it's absloute chaos and impossible to park - along with Madrid it's almost certainly the worst European city I've ever driven a car into. Sat nav repeatedly looses signal in the city centre too.

Only on Las Ramblas and the metro. Take normal precautions and you´ll be fine

Interesting, I have been to Spain twice on my motorbike and I wouldn't say their motorways are any better or worse than any other in Europe.

I dodged all of the big cities though. And didn't have a sat-nav!

You have to be very careful parking in Barcelona as often the signs aren't very clear and they will tow you.

My mate has lived out there for the last 18 months and has a UK car out there. The closest he can park without a resident's permit is a good 30min+ walk away from his flat!

Not sure if there are any long stay multi-storeys out there?

Thanks again for the comments.
I'm still not sure what we'll do, the hotel have now told us that we can have parking in an adjacent building that has an underground park. So that sounds ideal if the in-city driving is'nt as bad as it sounds.

Its supposed to be a relaxing break rolleyes

Just an update:

Got back yesterday from our roadtrip, just short of 4000 miles mostly in Spain. In the end we did lay the car up for 3 days at Barcelona airport and took an aerobus into the centre. This, on seeing the traffic in the city centre was the right decision, especially as i did over the next couple of days witness the same foreign cars (mostly NL) going round and round, poor sods!!
On the way back we got a taxi for 20 euros to the airport, which I would recommend, although the driver like most drivers in that City thought he was Alonso, good fun though.
The Spaniards were all very helpful, lovely country!
