I am not allowed to leave the RAC!
Discussion
Have been checking out some things on my accounts and realise I have been a member since 1999. However as I have never required their service and I renewed recently at over £100.00 I decided to give them a call to cancel my membership and claim a refund on unused cover....reasonable or so I thought.
Turns out after speaking to several very bored (one yawned) phone answerers I am unable to leave until the next renewal. They dont do refunds, its not their policy to do that according to the twit I ended up with. They have a complaints procedure but its by post...they dont talk on the phone?!
So if you are thinking about he RAC, think long and hard. I suspect the small print has some other equally erksome paragraphs!

No refunds made on cancellations more than 14 days after the policy starts.

When you take out a phone contract do you expect to be able to cancel after 3 months? Rather like the other poster I'm surprised that you're surprised. It isn't like insurance, it is a year long service you signed up for. How would they be able to successfully plan a business if people could pull out as and when they wanted? The people who pulled out would usually be the people who have just used your service to the full, i.e. broken down with an unrepairable car and been recovered, and then after an expensive recovery (probably more than the cost of their subscription) they saunter off and want a refund!

I found this out a year ago. My dad died about 2 weeks after automatically renewing his RAC membership. When dealing with his estate (assets not car
), I called the RAC to cancel and they said no refunds. I thought it was a bit harsh - my dad had died and he wasn't doing it to fiddle the system! But, as others have said, it is in the small print (which we all read of course) just like when Orange increased the monthly subscription on my contract last year ...
I've come across it again this week as we've recently bought a couple of new cars and they come with breakdown cover for the first three years. I understood RAC wouldn't pay a refund for the unused cover but I was surprised that they wouldn't actually let me cancel now. I have to wait until my renewal in February - and my renewal is a recurring payment on a credit card. I've put it in my diary to call them again in January to make it clear I'm not renewing, which is a little inconvenient/easy to forget and hardly endearing them to me for when the breakdown cover on my new cars expires in a few years' time.
Small print is a b
h but it's a pretty small cost in the scheme of things.

It would make no sense for them to do refunds. Otherwise muppets would buy cover, go on a 3 week driving holiday and cancel upon their return....
Exactly.rangie999 said:
My point is that the small print is what it is however as I havnt called them out in 12 years you would have thought they might have taken a view?
Also I did mine on a card and have the same problem in that I have to cancel next August!
You're leaving them never to return, so why would they put themselves out for you? Also I did mine on a card and have the same problem in that I have to cancel next August!
