Wasn't until I got home & saw this thread that I realised he had died on 11 September.

Very much so. He was another who could have changed the course of WDC/WCC history had the big C not got to him.

I thought Sky did a very nice pre-Monza piece on Ronnie. Their "Echoes from the past" segments, bring a timely reminder to the new F1 audience, the high price paid to reach this point.

RIP Ronnie I will never forget that September day

Remember seeing him in a 6hr race at Silverstone - mid seventies.

The cars were out on the circuit when we arrived - either practice or qualifying.
We knew that he was sharing an orange Jagermeister BMW saloon. Saw the car go past a couple of times (Woodcote chicane), but we weren't sure who was driving. Then it went into the pits.

Out again next time round it aproached noticeably quicker, and danced over the chicane with never more than two wheels on the surface.

We didn't need to see the crash-helmet colours to know who was driving. Legend.

Ronnie- remember him crashing hugely at Mallory F2, sideways at Silverstone and dutifully following Mario's 79 around at Brands. And Gunnar- wonderful F3 drive at Cadwell; he just looked so totally at one with the car. At Silverstone F3 he crashed in front of us, ducked under the barrier and cadged a fag from me. It was a JPS , appropriately enough.

I have no doubt Ronnie would have won at Brands with ease (Mario or not), after blitzing qualifying, but the car failed after half a dozen laps and he was out

First saw him at this race when my father took me to Sweden from my native Denmark - I was 14 and it was only my second race meeting.
