Gotta be the 180 rather than the 150. Why have less when you can have more?

I hate the MK4 golf looks, they look really dated. So I think the cheapest car with that engine is an Audi A3, there are a fair few available, but can anyone advise how to tell apart the 150 from the 180 just from looks? Alot of the ads dont mention it.

For example:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2000-AUDI-A3-1-8-T-hatch...

Pretty sure that will be a 150 but not sure?^

Why settle for a 180 when cupra r with 225 or 210 are at a good price nowadays?

Even if you go fro just the cupra and not the r version it will still be 180

If you want a 1.8t what you really want is for the 1.8t to be sitting in an Elise....

IIRC the 150 is the fwd and the 180 is the Quattro with regards to A3s.

Why an A3 or a Golf?

Leon Cupra R, Octavia VRS and even the Audi TT at least bring some form of joy to proceedings.

I think I'd rather buy a Beetle with a 1.8T and modify it to S3+ Spec than drive a Golf or A3.

The worst engine I have ever had to fault find in my entire life. Make sure you get a good one.

All the SEAT Cupra Mk1s were the 180 engines, but as mentioned above, the Cupra R is a much better drive than any of the Golf derivatives, Brembo brakes, 18 inch rims, Audi TT 225 BAM engine, easily mapped to 270 BHP etc.

Another option is the Skoda Octavia VRS Mk 1, 180 engine and they can be had for a good price now.

But then what you really need in the Elise is a supercharged K20.

I guess the OK would rather not look like a Chav or a girl.

So you judge people by their cars then?

I think A3s look great. They also look like they handle well.

Golfs = look st
Octavia = more of a saloon, would prefer a hatchback
Audi TT = Nice, but £5k+ for an ~02 plate?! Expensive.
And since they only 180s in an A3 is quattro, it looks like my best option will be to look at a Cupras.

My MK4 Anniversary is for sale and doesn't look bad at all. It's also had the handling sorted out to perfection now and the engine is faultless.

It'll be in the classified later on if you want to see.

What about an S3 or are they still silly expensive?

Oh and A3s grip well, but they don't handle.

Infrequently. We all have different circumstances.

The Leon comes pre-chavved out of the factory and looks like a pig in a wig. The VRS's near me tend to be driven by angry men who feel it is necessary to tell everyone that they drive the "thinking man's Golf". TT's are usually driven by girls & without a bit of work are even less fun to drive than a standard Mk4 GTI 1.8T

Apart from the VRS thing I agree, I normally find more angry Leon drivers than Skoda ones.

They're pretty dull engines, I'm not sure you'll enjoy it for long.

Brilliant.
Bigger wheels help too.

What about the Seat Ibiza, both the Cupra and FR came with 1.8T lumps (FR = 150bhp, Cupra = 180 in later cars), some very well modified earlier cars around too with 2-300bhp. The Polo GTI had a 1.8T too but these are probably silly money still.
