Disconnecting the battery

I'm sure this has been answered before but the search is still down.

I'm going to get the exhaust bracket re-welded on my car and I'm told I should get the battery disconnected first, otherwise I could fry the ECU.

If my memory serves me correctly the battery is behind the nearside wheel arch.

What's the easiest process so I can tell my mechanic friend ?

Driver side inner arch panels off and you can get to the terminals.

You will need to enter the code to make the radio work afterwards.

You can actually reach down the side of the engine and undo the earth pretty easily. I use a 1/4 inch ratchet with 13mm socket as it is a bit tight down there.

Take off rear drivers side wheel , remove wheel arch cover , disconnect ecu and put in very safe place , disconnect battery .......with your luck i would take ecu home and sleep with it

To be fully safe you need to disconnect the ECU, not just the battery, as Tux says.

This is probably a silly question, but if you unplug the ecu for too long does it revert back to the original settings and therefore losing your remap, you can all tell me if I'm stupid

No Duncan the map stays fine , the adaptive map will need re learning but that sometimes can be a good thing .

That would have been funny!

Where do I get one of the brackets, the favourite one that splits, or should I expect a welders kit to have something appropriate?

Only did the battery when I had mine done, ECU was fine. I had a brace put over the fracture and it's been fine for the last few years, took about ten minutes once the clam was off. Any decent welder can do it with his eyes shut.

same from me... its a 5 min job removing the ecu when you know where it is lol.

I take mine out every night and sleep with it under my pillow lol

+1....its a 5 minute job, just splash guard off and pull out the ecu plugs, with a bit of training you can do it without taking the splash guard off..

So to be clear it's not a 5 minute job?

Put car on ramp
Front passenger wheel off
Disconnect battery
Rear drivers wheel off
Disconnect ECU
Weld

From memory the ECU is above the battery, so you only need one wheel off (unless your battery is in a very strange place which requires the front off).

You can get to it by just taking the splash guard off without removing the wheel, but no wheel makes it a lot easier.

Thanks Joust, job all done. New bracket welded into place.

My mechanic guy found the battery and ECU in the same corner after I gave him duff information. He knows not to trust me about these things

Came home to another Jetstream bill. Jesus it's been an expensive month!
