We're currently into the long drag for a set of police commissioners
The voting options seem to be largely put forward by the political parties. Do we really want a political police service or do we want to keep the Chief Constable in charge?
Will one of the vote options be - Keep the Chief

The Police Chief will be someone from outside - another political appointee?

Where is this going? tumbleweed

News or the SP&L?

FWIW, I am in favour of police officers becoming chief constables. To have political appointees damages the integrity of the position.

Well I would imagine the reintroduction of personal feifdoms whereby police commissioners (mainly politically motivated) will be able to influence policing of their own personal hobby horse. I understand the favourite in our area (Labour) wants to crack down hard on Domestic Violence and other crimes that affect Women. Nothing wrong with that as long as other areas of policing (and the general community) dont suffer as a result. I predict massive apathy by the public with a low turn out followed by lots of political interference in operational policing and Chief Constables being even more risk averse as a result. Meanwhile, the frontline officers (any left?) will be ordering popcorn by the wagon full for the ensuing fall outs and inevitable battle of egos.
