Poorly Puss Cat
Discussion
Our Vertie is poorly
He is off his food listless, drooly and very smelly! The vet says all of his lymph glands are inflamed.
Vertie is off to the vet again in a few minutes to be sedated so tha tthe vet can take lymph samples by needle from a few of the glands.
Does anyone know what may be causing this? The vet didn't seem to sure (I wasn't there MrsB was).
Until yesterday Vertie was his usual right bouncy self.
He has an ongoing heart condition that is treated with Fortekor but he has been stable for 3 years.
He is a 7 year old neutered Bengal male.
Quite worried about him.

It could be several things ranging from an overwhelming infection to sadly something more sinister such as a cancer but until all the tests are back it's be hard to say.
Have they done a blood test to check his red and white blood cell count?
I really hope they find some answers for him so they can get to the right line of treatment. Are they going to keep him in on a drip if he is not eating? Does he have a temperature? An ultrasound scan maybe suggested aswell.
Has he ever beeen tested for FeLV and FiV?
Where's the smell coming from. Does his mouth look alright. If he is drooly and has a smelly mouth he may have a nasty infection in there which may account for his lymph glands and the suddenness of it. I hoping they will have a good look at this possibility whilst he is sedated.
Sorry not really any helpful answers there, just a lot of guesses
Good luck for him.

Blood test was done yesterday, results today.
Currently undecided about staying in, he was hungry this morning but not allowed to eat due to having to be sedated.
His mouth is fine, the smell is coming from the other end according to the vet and smells like glands around the anal region?
Not sure about temperature, he has a temp micro chip so they will have taken a reading, I am not sure of the result
Tested for FLV and FiV previously but not in the last 12 months
Will see what the vet says when we collect Vertie later
It's good he seems hungry. Probably don't need to worry about the felv or fiv in that case. I really hope it's just a nasty infection ?maybe of the glands, which is making him feel poorly. Hopefully back to his old self very soon
. at least with him sedated they'll be able to be really thorough re: checking him over whilst he is relaxed.

It seems he has been in a fight, he had a big abscess in his neck which has been drained and a punctured tongue (hence the drooling)
The abscess explains the lymph glands being up (the vet thought the abscess was an enlarged lymph gland)
The smell is apparently a normal shock reaction
Injected with antibiotics and looking better already. He has eaten 3 fillets of poached cod since he got home and given us a good telling off for his visit to the vet.
Apparently he is vaccinated against FiV FeLV etc

He'll only be vacc against FeLV, there isn't a vaccine for FiV but that will prob only be a concern if he is in a lot of fights.
He would have felt pretty s
t - he'd have felt achy and sore with a temperature. Ouch re: the mouth aswell, really surprised the smell wasn't from his mouth. Wonder if he released his glands explaining why he seemed to smell around his bum.
So overwhelming infection was the result...phew, at least that should be fairly easy to sort out. Good too know
. Wishing him a speedy and smooth recovery.
