987 Radio upgradeable?
Discussion
Hello.
Thinking of viewing a 987 at the weekend. I believe it has the basic CDR-24 system, which I think is 2 dash tweeters, 2 door speakers.
I understand from an old Porsche brochure there is this basic spec, a medium spec (Porsche Sound Package Plus) and top spec (BOSE).
Basically, how can I spot the spec in any given car? I see the BOSE cars have small badges on the doors, but the medium system is invisible, as it were.
Also if a car has just the basic setup, can I upgrade to more speakers easily? Are there empty speaker holes in a Boxster where the BOSE stuff would normally go?
I'm not looking to change the radio, just the amount of speakers in the car!

You can probably retrofit BOSE to a non-BOSE car, but it'll be a massive job and really not worth the hassle. You'll need the BOSE amp, sub and speakers (they occasionally come up on eBay) and then you will need to wire the whole thing up to the MOST system and probably get the car recoded to work. A cheaper option is to fit an aftermarket amp in the boot and high quality speakers behind your existing grilles. Not only is this cheaper, it'll probably sound a lot better. Trust me, the BOSE systems as fitted to 987s are not particularly impressive.
Ultimately, if you want BOSE, buy a car with BOSE fitted, an upgrade is really not worth the hassle.

There will be the same number of speakers in the doors, just of inferior quality. Not 100% sure but would suggest that the rear speakers may not be fitted on base spec stereo cars. Not that big a deal though as the rear speakers suck, even on the Bose cars. It is also worth noting that you only really hear fron speakers inside a car, speak to you local car hi-fi specialist and they will advise you further on this. The sub fitted to Bose cars is actually the one designed for the 997 Cab, so it's not optimised, particularly for the Cayman. Honestly, a high quality, well fitted aftermarket solution will undoubtedly sound better than the factory fit BOSE system. You may want to change the headunit as well as the CD-24 is awful, you'll need a fitting kit of course, but these are readily available online.
Don't let the stereo put you off the right car, honestly, the stereo is a lot less importnat than the rest of the car. When I bought both my Cayman S and my 997 C2S I was pretty fussy about the spec and waited for the right cars to turn up but I didn't put huge importance on the stereo. I got lucky and both cars had BOSE but I did retro-fit sat-nav to the Cayman and that was reasonably straightforward once I had the Porche workshop instructions and all the right parts but was by no means an easy job. So, from experience, I would say if you can avoid messing about with all of this stuff, I most definitely would.
