Just got my car tax renewal through. Inside was a helpful leaflet from the government, sorry the energy savings trust, telling me how to save money on fuel, including the above gem. So I have the government using my money to tell me how to save money since things are so expensive now because the government is taking so much of my money. Drive slowly! Take the bus! Try cycling!

Dear The Government. Go fk yourself, in the eye. Those cuts you keep on about? I've found one you can make. Any who talks about changing up below 2000 rpm, for starters. Joyless socialist watermelon fkers.

Change up BEFORE 2000rpm? I generally regard the redline as a reasonable guide hehe

So why is that so hard? Are you one of those drivers who has to redline your car in every gear then come to screaming halt two seconds in front of me at the lights? You know, the sort of driver everyone else calls a knob?

this is the same government who advises "drive in 3rd gear" in 30mph zones to avoid speeding. (when in fact, the best way to avoid speeding is to simply look at that big round dial thingy in front of you that points to the speed your vehicle is currently doing ;-)

The last van I hired had a nice annoying green arrow that flashed at you every time you exceeded 2000 rpm.

Surely 2000rpm isn't optimal for the engine? If you change at 2k it means you're putting unnecessary load on the engine way below 2k in the next gear? I'd have thought between 2,500 and 3,000 would be better? But I don't really know f*ck all anyway.

Scenic diesels hate it! The chap over the road was told that he was not revving the engine high enough when pulling away and the turbo was not cutting in. Hence why he complained to the garage about its sluggishness.

Diesels in general don't like low revs for several reasons. Newer cars with DPF filters are probably going to like it even less.

What do we do on motorways if our car does over 2000rpm at 70?

You don't really get valve bounce at 1,950rpm. I think you misread a Saga leafletsmile

No, dipst. My engine does not come on turbo and get into the powerband until at least 2500 rpm. oh, and 2000rpm in top equates to about 45mph. So by following their stupid advice, I am labouring the engine and reducing its fuel economy around town as well as causing a hazard on the open road

Great advice. For CW7 in his lorry. I think I'll still have an occasional foray over to the right hand side of the dial though.

Yup, 2000rpm = 70mph.
