Autotrader Crap?

Been phoning a few cars advertised on autotrader the past couple of days. Most numbers, via telesafe, are unobtainable!!!
Is this down to their crap system (I would be pissed off if I paid to advertise) or do they do it once a car is sold?? I would have thought they would just remove the ad, so must conclude it is crap.

I've used it to advertise my cars in the past on 3 separate occasions as a 'last resort' (as its usually the most expensive service) and every time I have never had anything but spam emails and those ridiculous companies who offer to sell your car for you if they can have a percentage for themselves!
Usually the car sells within a week of putting it on autotrader but from being advertised elsewhere! Total waste of money IMO.

.I tried to sell my bike through them recently and had no interest at all. Except for an attempted scam from someone making out that they wanted to buy it.
A saleswoman called me after the ad expired offering me a "special rate" to readvertise it. When she was on the phone I told her about the scam email and she just said something like "yeah, that happens a lot with us" or something equally dimissive.
Cost me £30 or so and due to the scam and the lack of interest when I reported it, I'll not use them again. First time, last time.

Similar experience selling a Focus 2 years ago - instead of a scam I got someone ringing and accusing me of misrepresenting a car's age by putting a newer plate on it... Got the same call from them and nearly laughed myself to death, they offered me another month for £25, sold it on eBay two weeks later with 0 hassle for less!
Sold a car recently via Autotrader. Spam emails were easy to spot and ignore. Some calls from dealers wanting to buy for stock at a knock down price, but also a good number of private buyers. You will always get time wasters nothing to do with the medium you are selling through. I think a couple of months on Autotrader and PH conbined cost me about £120. Too many people willing to complain and whine when things don't work as easy as expected, and not enough people willing to take responsibilty: too ready to blame someone or something else. Get over it.

I sold my Vectra through Autotrader a couple of years ago and buyers were literally queuing up for it! Wish I'd auctioned the thing now!
I think you just need to be realistic with the price and it will sell. Literally the phone didn't stop ringing from the time the ad went live and the first person to view it bought it.

The OP asked for views on people's experience of Autotrader and some of those were negative. Some not.
AutoTrader is run by the Guardian Media Group and subsidises the Guardian newspaper (which makes a loss).
