I bought a 05 Freelander from a dealer for £5k 3 months ago. Since then it has broken down 6 times with various issues. The dealer had a go at fixing it every time and now it needs specialist help for the LPG conversion which isnt functioning. It has cost me a week of lost money so I had a chat to the owner and the sales people about taking it back and I'll buy something else off their forecourt, I was thinking of the 320D for £8k that they have. They've offered me £2.5k p-ex.

Is there any recourse or am I just the unlucky sod who bought a lemon and I have to put up with it? frown

They're probably already close to making a loss on the car (if they haven't already) I can see why they would only offer £2.5k in PX because they know to move it on they'll have to throw another grand or more at it, then sell it with 3 or 4 months more depreciation having taken place.

And they know it'll be back from the next mug they sell it on to for another £5K.

Lucrative little business. Buy a few old LRs, keep selling them on, them buy them back for half price every 6 months! laugh

Find a car you want somewhere else and see what they offer as a p/x value without knowing the full history of the faults.

If it were me, i wouldn't be throwing another penny their way

6 months of hassle and now they're doing you a favour by offering you half what you paid to chop it in against another of their cars.

Screw that!

But you only know less than half the story and with no real facts. Hardly enough to make any sort of judgement on.

Do you know they knowingly sold a Lemon?

All we know is that the OP bought a car, they have stood by the car, but their period of responsibility is up and they've given a not wholly unreasonable PX offer on a car that they know will cost them money to retail again. If the OP had a faultless Freelander they would probably have offered more.

Perhaps, but it sounds like the LR wasn't fit for purpose in the first place. Offering half what he paid seems like a kick in the teeth to me.

1. How do you know it wasn't fit for purpose? Before answering this please read the SOGA links I posted above!
2. The valuation may indeed be completely fair, we do not have enough information to form any conclusion on. However there has been a period of time past and the vehicle has covered more miles. Therefore it's value now will be less than when it was sold. We do not also know the condition of the vehicle vs when it was sold or any other factors that may affect it.

It is a 7 year old car which had some faults which, it seems, the dealer has done his bit by standing behind. Now the period of any responsibility is up and they're under no obligation to buy it back for anything.

That's life with 7 year old Freelanders!
