Just a bit of idle musing...

My S4 will comfortably pull off in third, and in the same gear get very close to the ton before the limiter cuts in.

I'm not advocating this as a driving style, but I thought it might be interesting to hear from other PHers as to the 'one gear range' of their cars.

If you can't get away from stationary in top gear, somethings up with your car, or your driving. The clutch might not appreciate it, but there's no reason you can't.
I was talking about pulling off 'comfortably'. I can move off in sixth with lots of clutch feathering if I'm so inclined, but in third it's easy and rapid enough to be a 'normal' progression.

Aston V8Vantages have a ridiculously high reverse gear. Cause clutches to wear out quickly if you have to reverse a lot up hils. Supposedly it will do 62MPH in reverse. None of the owners on PH have tried to verify that figure though!

My dad pulled away in 5th in his landcruiser when he had it, albeit in low range. Which is cheating i guess.

I've never quite understood the pub/journo talk of how comfortably a car pulls away from standstill in a higher gear. Apart from some pre-war Bentley or such like, why should that impress anyone? What use is it? I assume the development engineers gave some thought into chosing the gear ratios to put into the 'box and didn't just chuck away the first two as being unnecessary. Otherwise you're surely just causing unnecessary strain on various components?

I think there are a couple touching 105/107mph now too! Scary really

The only car I can think of was my dads old ZT-T 260, 4th from stationary quite happily

Tesla roadster does 0-120mph in one gear.

0-60 in under 4 seconds in that gear too.

I can't think of a petrol car that gets close to that.

My '08 R1 will do, it says here, 99mph in 1st!!!

Given that I don't actually need anything like a 186mph top speed I have considered changing the sprockets for less top speed, and lower gearing. However what has tempered this idea has been the knowledge that I think this would result in a swift visit to A&E yikes

Honda powered Elise will easily beet that in 3rd (and probably 4th if your abusive enough)

it can also keep up that performance for more than 10 minutes, unlike the Tesla..

You sure about that?
err. sorry, should have said 4th

4th (relatively) is a fairly low gear ratio, (11.9Mph/1000rpm) so easy to use off the line, and because the engine can go to 8,600+rpm, you easily over 100Mph before the limiter.

Yes, the clutch will not be thanking you, but it will do it.

I was watching an old TG last night when Jezza did 0-160-odd (and still going) in 5th (or was it 6th)in a C6 Z06.

I'm sure my Mustang would start in 4th but I'm not going to try for the sake of finding out.

My car has a geared top speed of 193mph in 6th but only 370Nm of torque at 5000rpm...it does not like it.

To answer the question, I've pulled away in 3rd before without that much fuss and that will go 110mph-ish...not that I'd ever do that, occifer.

Assuming the Honda Elise does do 0-60 in under 4 seconds in 4th gear, and also assuming that non-production cars are fine for the purpose of this thread, then 11.9mph/1000rpm and a 8600rpm red line don't get you to 120mph, it gets you to to 102mph. You want a 10k rpm limit to beat a Tesla.

I know which of the cars I'd rather own, and it's not the quiet one.

My car will do 0-140 in 1 gear.

I have managed to pull away in 5th before and 2 people I know who have both had the same car in standard form have managed 140 out of theirs.

Although i have never done 0-140 it is achievable although thats an indicated 140 not GPS so In actual fact more like 130ish

I'd imagine there are some cars with large torquey n/a engines that would get close, my charger will burnout easily from a standstill in top gear and is still pulling strong at the end of a quarter mile at around 115mph, it wouldn't do that 0-60 in top, but there are much faster cars about than mine.

My gearbox failed on the Monaro resulting in it being stuck in 5th I can vouch that it was happy to pull away in 5th even on a hill but the resulting smoke out of the clutch wasn't something I'd be keen to repeat. Can also vouch that it will do well in excess of a 160 (GPS verified) in 5th as well.
