Having just got myself into my first "big" engined car (e39 528i), And returning 27.7 Mpg on the last tank, I am going to have a go at miss daisy driving for the next few hundred miles, and see if how high I can get the average. This is partly due to being told countless times that I should buy shares in Shell, and that I shall be living in a box by the end of the week due to fuel bills.

Any predictions, realistic target? If i can get it close to 40, I may have a go the otherway around for giggles biggrin

Anyone had extraordinary MPG? Either way, 12mpg in a micra, 40mpg in a gallardo?

Cheers

Talking to a very nice chap with a Bullitt 40th special edition Mustang last weekend.
His Ford V8 ranges from 33 to 8.4 mpg, this was with A/C on and on "Private Roads" obviously. ... wink wink.
So I would expect somewhere around these figures for the Beemer.
Incidentally I have competitions with the OH, her 1.4 diesel Fiesta to my 1.9 diesel Bora, plus I drive hers, and based on the on-board computer, best I got from the VW is 53.7mpg and the Ford managed 64.5, but it does get very tiring, the concentration required, these are based on driving the same routes at similar times of day, with the same load, on a mixture of A, B roads Dual Carriageway and Motorway 127 miles each way 254 miles total.
The TVR required a tank full or there abouts so 25 ish, being not of the computer age, more stone age.

I averaged a rather good 31mpg in a 2001 BMW 740i. I was chuffed with that. Got 18mpg out of a 1.5DCI Renault Megane once, that took effort.

A mate of mine gets 65mpg average out of his Renault Laguna DCI (05 model) due largely to his ability to drive massively efficently. He actually finds it fun, which is odd but I kind of get it

I get about 400m.p.g. (four hundred miles per gallon) out of my Jag' engined '36 Austin hot rod.
That is oil tho' - I think the bores may be a little worn...
Petrol is about 15ish.

31MPG from a 4.4 v8 is really going some.

I am aiming for 35, Which is probably a tad optimistic for a 150,000 mile car, but still.

Will update with OBC pics, and varify at the end.

I usually manage to average around 50 mpg (brim to brim, not OBC) in my e39 525d. Just filled up yesterday and it was 52 mpg for last tankfull. Obviously, that figure drops as the weather gets colder.
In mid-winter it's more like 46/47 mpg.

I can get 22-25mpg out of a 400bhp v8 - the 50 mph average speed cameras help!

An E39 528i shouldn't have much problem cracking 40mpg - they were known for being quite economical on a run.

You must have been Miss Daisy.

I got about 8mpg out of the one we hired. Smiles per gallon though, very high

Sat at 75 down the M3 and A303... around town gets interesting, 5-8mpg is common.

I had a 300 mile drive home from Cumbria when I bought the Stag, It got close to 25mpg - not bad for a 38 year old 3 litre V8.

For 99% of people a 2.8 is a big engine. Stop trolling. Again

How is it trolling? Isn't the 2.8 the entry level engine in the 5 Series?

For the e39 the 520i is the entry level model.

Z4M: Last tank averaged 26mpg with a mixture of motorway and b-road commuting. Could be far worse.
