COOLING SYSTEM REFILL
Discussion
I've just had my radiator repaired and am about to put it back on. The only thing is I'm not too sure of the correct procedure for refilling it. I've looked at previous threads and they refer to something called a swirl pot, but having looked at my car (1994 4.0HC), I can only see the cylindrical expansion tank. Does anyone know the right approach to take to prevent air locks etc??
Id say and some one will correct me probably, is to fill via the expansion tank up to about 2" below top. leave cap off open heater valve to full heat and start car up for a couple of minutes. switch off engine top up radiator if necessary to 2" below and refit cap. Start engine again and get it hot. Watch temp gauge at this point and make sure it dosent overheat or rise to quick. Switch off engine allow to cool and recheck your coolant level. I think that should work. Good luck old bean.
There have been several threads on this before. You may have two chambers, a lower one with a large blue screw cap near the rad and a higher one with a small brass screw cap.
It depends on whether you are pre or post serpentine, ie do you have one long, wide fanbelt or several smaller ones.
You need to end up with the upper one full to the brim, the lower one with approx 2-3 inches of space and a full radiator.
On serpentine, the order is;
Fill the lower one (leaving space), do it up, unscrew the upper one, fill it up to the top, leave it open, undo rad bleed screw (front off side) until all of the air is gone, do up rad screw, top up top tank again, do it up, check lower tank.

Lee,
I also thought pre-serpentine engines had multiple belts. This is actually not the case as I found out courtesy of Quinny...
Have a look at:

As for your cooling system refill, I would guess that you have a pre-serpentine engine so only one aluminium pot. Instructions in previous replies to this thread look fine, BWDIK?
