I AM LOOKING AT PURCHASING A V8S.

JUST VIEWED ONE, VERY NICE CONDITION,FULL SERVICE HISTORY ETC..

BUT ITS GETTING ON FOR 120,000 MILES.

SEEMS VERY HIGH MILEAGE COMPARED TO A LOT THAT ARE ADVERTISED.

ASKING ABOUT £8500.

SHOULD I EXPECT PROBLEMS ?

ADVICE APPRECIATED.

Last summer I walked away from a similar condition car by the sounds of it, and that was up for £7K. Back then I didn't want the hassles you should expect with such a car. Just an opinion!

high miles not a aproblem for me. I'd steer clear of low mileage cars .. I always wonder why people go for 3 year old cars with 6k miles on .. why hasn't the owner wanted to drive one of the most fantastic spoarts cars on the planet? .. was it so unreliable / uncomfy / thirtsy / draughty /etc etc ..??? 120k means it's been reliable and used. go for it, but wind that price down first .. it's aproaching the prices of mid-mileage cars in the 40-50k bracket. the general rule is : if it looks OK and drives OK it's probably OK!

If you are serious about buying it, give either David Batty a ring (Surrey-01483 811995) or Mark/Dave at Tower View Race Services(London-0208 452 6922), and ask them if you can take the car down to them to go over first. Assuming the owner will let you do this, and that is near by.

Ideally I would do this with any TVR I buy.

But that price does need to come down a bit.....

Good luck

I would not have bought my Griffith at over 80k if miles was a worry .. the history showed any of the early probs had been sorted asap and all is well.

Mines just clocked 94000 miles this morning and as long as its been looked after all it says to me is that like mine it has probably been an everyday driver and therefor problems have been sorted ASAP.

High miles or only a problem if it hasn't been maintained.

Cheers

Oo johno ..thats 55,000 more than your twin.... must get you're chassis/vehicle number off you and see how close together they are... should have had a look when we had the bonnets up the other day....

On the subject of mileage.. what does anyone think of the 93 chim for sale in Sprint with 75k on it at a Low price.. I'm well tempted...

Cheers
Matt.

If it has the history to back up the work that has gone on in the past. I would expect a rather thick folder i.e. it must have had some major components changed, Cam?, Clutch(es)?, drive shafts? calipers? discs? wish bones? trailing arms? steering rack & UJ's? to name but a few of the things that probably would have been changed over this mileage.
Would I pay £8.5K for it, no, maybe £7K assuming it does have a rather thick set of receipts for the above and an independent specialist clean bill of health.
There is a 92 V8S in the PH classifieds at £9.5K with only 30K on the clock which if a straight car seems much better value, the 'normal' going rate for a genuine one like that would be nearer £11K.

If the history seems good, go for it. My 350i has done 110,000 miles and runs very well whether on the road or whilst Sprinting.

But yours surely doesn't have much that’s original and covered that kind of mileage, bar the chassis and probably has a folder of bills that would frighten Gordon Brown.
Even if you were to consider changing, at that price you'd probably get your arm bitten off. Particularly if someone was after a Sprint prepared vehicle. I suppose if you do go down that road then you'll need to convince Johno when you give him spin in Zolder that he needs the car

Anyway green V8S's are worth £3k more than any other colour due to their rarity.

Very true, well said that man! I think the green ones handle better and are more reliable, too.

Can't see me selling the green machine really, it is pretty wild and only a complete nutter would want it. Problem is I can get a lot more power from the engine but it's going to be hard to get much more through that transmission. The next big upgrade is looking very tricky. I'm severely limited in the area of transmission mods because I have to keep the original type diff housing. Its getting to the point where my only options are going fully modified or starting again with another car. Would be frustrating to have to trade down to a standard 500 though!

I would'nt let the high mileage bother you to much, as long as the car's been lovingly maintained.
For example i was at a trackday yesterday and my mate took me out in his chimaera 400 with 102,000 miles, the tuscans were struggling to catch him on the straights nevermind the corners!!!!!!
Cheers
