So you are me.

You have twins.

You need to replace your MX5 with a family barge.

These are the choices i.e. out of all the cars shown these are the ones the OH approves of.

No other suggestions available.

You have £10k maximum budget.

Which do you buy and why?

This will be the end of it, I promise. Whichever wins the poll I will buy.

Thanks.

Hated our d5 xc90 , geartronic box means max derv noise at all times .. , seats were poor too , especially front pax as had to hold onto stuff every corner.
Kids liked it though...
Why bother with a soft roader , e or 5 wagon would fit the bill better imho

The female mind, a mistery.

Kindness to kids, animals, minorities, plants and what not is de rigeur, but when it comes to vehicle choice all that goes out of the window. Is that an instinct to protect the own brood, or just lack of information?

From Developments in pedestrian crash safety:

"The trend of lower and more rounded bonnet leading edges for passenger cars leading to reduced midbody injuries is significantly offset by the recent popularity of SUVs. By 2004, 40% of vehicle sales in United States belonged to the category of light trucks and vans, and analyses of real accident data showed that pedestrian fatality risk in collisions with these vehicles is substantially higher than for conventional passenger cars."

with twins and two other kids, sliding doors are the killer app.

We have a VW Touran which is ugly but immensely practical. with 4 kids, we then added the VW Caravelle to the fleet. again, immensely practical.

The new Ford B Max looks great but I would not buy it for safety reasons...no B pillar in a side shunt can only end in tears.

Did you only show her a selection of stupid high-rise tractors, then?

Grow some balls. Buy a decent estate.

Had two XC90's. Both were laden with problems. Both were money pits. Both went the journey. The are better options out there.

One was new, one was second hand.

What about all the other estate cars you've started threads about in the last few months?

Oh and BTW, if it's a 4x4 that you must have. Show your misses this:

Info compiled by the DfT.

And then go out and get one of these:

There is some method in the madness too:

-Really good residuals, even more so compared to the vehicles you are currently looking at. Which means total cost of ownership is going to be a lot less come resale time.

-They are actually hugely practical. I've grown up around Land Rover's and they make excellent family vehicles.

-Loads of room.

-Kids will simply love going in them.

-Fun to drive and own.

-Cheap to run and maintain.

Also you can make them look like this, which will have the result of you grinning like a school boy every time you get in and drive it!

Its an odd selection? What about all the other potential cars/SUVs out there? Or do they not meet OH approval?

I've picked the volvo as I've never driven any of them, never read a review of any of them but the volvo looks the nicest from the outside, so even if it does break down a lot at least you'll have something nice to look at.

Personally I'd much rather a 4x4 than an estate. The only thing worse than an estate IMO is an MPV, but it's real close call.

Yeah I know I have been a bit thread happy recently but I am terribly indecisive about these things. The estates were put on the back-burner due to a) very few having a 7 seat option; and b) being a tight squeeze in the middle seat when two car seats are in the back.

Re - not having balls, happy wife = happy life. To be honest, in fairness to her she is also fed up with my indecisiveness!

The Hyundai is on the list because it looks ok, has 7 useable seats, a massive boot and is pretty reliable and low-cost for a big car.

The Volvo is on the list for the same reasons although I am now dubious about the reliability / cost of ownership proposition.

The Lexus....I just fancied bomb-proof luxury!

Why? I mean, if you want to drive a tractor, granted - but if you are more or less forced into something 'practical', wouldn't you rather have something that drives like a proper car, is easier on the wallet (that 2 ton+ kerb weight impacts everything from mpg to consumables, then there are the 4x4 gubbins and on the higher end stuff all the 'clever' bits to make a dynamically compromised starting point ride and handle a bit more like a car, like air suspension, active ARBs etc), isn't antagonising fellow road users on tight streets et al by its sheer bulk? What's so adventurous about the school run and Asda trips that you need tons of ground clearance and plastic wheelarch extensions, underbody protection etc.?

A nice 5-series Touring would make mince out of the OPs three choices in every single aspect of driving and ownership.
