I got an email telling me that I will soon have to download a critical patch.

Dear Customer,

Important information about your BT Yahoo! Internet service

In the next few days you'll be asked to install a critical patch for your BT Yahoo! Browser software.

This patch must be installed in order for your BT Yahoo! Browser software to continue working correctly.

You needn't do anything. The patch will be installed automatically and you should see the following message, or a similar one, once the patch installation is complete: 'Critical Patch installed successfully'.

Thank you for choosing BT Yahoo! Internet.

Best wishes,

BT Yahoo! Internet services team

I got that yesterday evening. The download took place this morning without me realising it until it was done and the system is still working.

Still not confident about downloading the new windows mega patch though. Bound to screw the machine up.

Bullcrap.
If they're installing automatic updates it's time to find another ISP.

I agree... What on earth is "BT Yahoo! Browser software"??

I don't need any software at all for my broadband, nor would I want any...

IIRC correctly BT sold their Internet side of BTOpenworld to Yahoo (or asked them to run the site and mail for them). The BT Yahoo! Browser software is their attempt to pull an AOL but simply uses a customised version of Internet Explorer from what I can see - this auto update will simply be a service pack or something.

We never installed their software as we didn't want their control and stuff so I used an I.E. install from scratch but now moved to the seemingly better FireFox (although memory usage is huge!)

True enough re Yahoo browser. I took it off as it was pretty shoddy to use. I'm using a netscape/mozilla/IE variation now.

I think I've had SP2 downloaded as it is showing in my programs and my IE isn't opening "pop-ups" (including opening new windows) I just wish that the tool to enable me to switch it off had been downloaded too.

I'm beginning to get seriously pissed off with crap MS work I must admit.

Crappy AOL style frontend browser that everyone gets now if they become BT Yahoo customers. If you got your Broadband before, like I did, you won't have it, and good job too.

Sorry guys you lot are worrying about nothing...

The BT Yahoo stuff is genuine, and it gives a toolbar on IE... some people use it, others don't. However, it does contain an updated pop-up blocker.

As for the Windows XP SP2... it's solid. Been installing it on lots of different machines (circa 2500 PC's so far) and not had any issues... although all machines are genuine Windows XP...
