Hi all

I've got this F1 race wheel (Nico Rosberg's Williams, if you care smile) and am getting some glass cut to go over the top to act as a table.

I'm toying with the idea of getting the exterior bit painted gloss black to smarten it up a little - but not sure. What's the consensus - Spray it or leave it?

If I was to get it sprayed, where's the best sort of place? An alloy wheel refurbisher for example?

Thanks

I'd leave it personally - looks very nice as it is. How much was it, and where did you get it from if you don't mind me asking?

Edit; just found this site. Seems cheap given how expensive they no doubt are to make new.

Surely you bought it at least partly because of what it was and relates to? If you spray it you might as well melt it down and turn it into something else.

Why would you mess with it? Sure, it's not exactly rare, but it's not a common everyday object either. It's an item of interest in its original state, not the sort of thing you paint black, otherwise it's not an F1 wheel anymore, it's a hunk of painted metal.

I can see why you'd consider painting it but I'd leave it smile

Cool toy. I shouldn't worry about getting done at an alloy refurb place because hopefully you are not going to have to put up with any weathering. You could probably do it yourself a lot cheaper with the same effect. Did you get that at an auction?

I have a similar one from the lesser Schumacher's Williams.

Is already black, and shows evidence of its use, but I wouldn't touch it, it is what it is.

Thanks for the replies, seems the consensus is to leave it as is - so I will smile

To avoid confusion, when I said "spray the exterior" I was referring to the area where the tyre was fitted, not the face.

For those who asked, I got it from the Williams factory in Grove along with the below in exchange for some work I did there (non motoring related sadly).

from another perspective, I am pretty sure it would be magnesium alloy too. so need to be painted in a different way to normal alloys. magnesium is pretty reactive stuff in the wrong environment, if I remember my chemistry lessons right.

Could well be wrong though. sure someone will correct me.

I'm not too sure either way. Given that I'll leave it unpainted now it shouldn't matter smile Thanks though

Er, yeah. Maybe not, eh?

I think the bit that would normally house the tyres would look with some sort of neoprene/rubber sheath over it. It indicates there would normally be a tyre there, and look smarter, furthermore if reduces the risk of damaging it/smashing a knee. The rest, so the face of the alloy would look excellent if smartened up and under a piece of glass.
