hi guys i have a 1998 mk4 golf 1.4 16v and its using way too much fuel max its doing is around 22mpg!! can anyone help find a solution? : (

Get it plugged into a diagnostic computer, likely a sensors gone on it (or 2). Get the part changed. Problem solved.

Lambda sensor more then likely, my brother had a similar issue. Good service wouldn't hurt too.

I have a friend with one. God awful.

OP, tyres pressures checked recently? Serviced recently? Any dashboard warning lights?

hi guys sorry for the very late reply. i've got my older brother who is mechanic to look at it and he also thought it was the lambda sensor causing the problem but we cant see to find the plug where the lambda clips into it doesnt seem to be the original engine either a believe its a polo 1.4 16v 100bhp

Just push it into a river and be done with it.

Probably a faulty coolant temp sensor, very common problem on the MK4 Golf.

Not really related to the thread but I'd noticed over the past month or so that the mpg on my PD130 had been gradually getting less, which is odd in the warm summer months. I'd checked the tyre pressures only a few months ago and they were fine at 30 and 28 respectively. Checked them all again this morning prior to a 560 mile round trip and was rather horrified to find that both the fronts were down to 20 PSI. First car I've had (out of a LOT) that has ever lost a significant amount of air out of its tyres in a short period. Doesn't seem to be anything up with them either, they're in good con, valves look fine and caps are screwed on tight, alloys in good con with no corrosion where the bead would be. Very weird. Needless to say after putting 32 PSI in them all for motorway speeds it now goes like a rocket in comparison!
