intake insulation
Discussion
just wondering what peoples thoughts are on insulation, i've just recieved a smooth bore intake pipe. the old one is wrapped with silver stuff(tech term) and i was just thinking about leaving off and maybe just putting a heat shield on. what are your thoughts i was thinking that once that silver stuff warmed up it would stay warm and with just a shield on air would circulate and maybe cool it down. and one last question if i may does anyone know what the silver stuff in the ACT kit is for?
sorry if this has been covered before but the search didn't work when i tried it

Wrapping the pipe tightly will only reflect the heat, ideally you should
have an air gap; air is a very good insulator
A cheap and effective solution incorporating an airgap can be achieved by wrapping the intake pipe and elbow in bubblewrap and then wrapping this with aluminium tape. Not as neat as the aftermarket reflective kits but probably more effective in keeping the airflow cool. have an air gap; air is a very good insulator

Does the air get a chance to get hot at the rate it moves up the induction pipes?
Good point, if you go for a good thrash, (A T/D is a perfect example) and feel the plenum immeadiately you stop, it is ice cold. The tube only needs the insulation for poodling about which is a lot of the time in this country!
So if even if your just poodling about is there any advantage in wrapping your intake in insulation.
From experience my plenum was always warm/hot untill i made an insulator plate.
Flowing (air intake) is a heat sink, Static (engine) is a heat soak.
So if the plenum is soaking heat from the engine when poodling why bother insulating the intake, if the receptive-(plenum)-is hot.
Insulate the plenum from the engine, lets face it most of the time the air temp here is-
polar bear wearing helley hansen.

I often wonder this about intercoolers...and the time the air actually spends in the system....
at 1000 rpm the engine will draw 5 litres (if 5 ltr car) every 2 turns....
so (1000 x 5) / 2 equates to 2500 litres per min its trying to draw!
or 42 litres per second
Can this be right?... how much does it achieve?... and at this flow rate.. how much heat can it pick up in the induction system... it must be in there mili-seconds!....
Tell you what.. next time I go to a TVR meeting I'm taking my own sub-aqua kit.. at this rate if they all start up at the same time there will be no air left to breath!!
Does show however why Turbo's etc only need as little as 8 PSI (over atmospheric) to make a huge difference
BTW Daz.. that bend it still too tight... You'll get another few HP if you get one with a bigger bend (or have you done that already and this is an old pic?)

This is an interesting train of thought. IMHO, the engine cannot draw 5ltrs of air per cycle because the airat 1000 rpm the engine will draw 5 litres (if 5 ltr car) every 2 turns....

gets 'stretched' as it is pulled (allowed) through the various restrictions of the inlet route, hence the compression ratio is reduced -even at full throttle. So that means less passing air is available to soak up that presented heat and this results in a hotter air charge reaching the cylinder. Insulating the inlet pipes and plenum should make a proper difference. BTW my favorite for the pipes would be a strip of thinnish foam against aluminium tape wound along, just like bike handlebar tape. Could look neat I think.

Replaced it since this picture ,slighly more radius but not alot . .at 1000 rpm the engine will draw 5 litres (if 5 ltr car) every 2 turns....

But if there is less air... it wont pick up as much?... and if there is less of it, wont it move faster... so less chance to soak up heat?.. All very interesting....gets 'stretched' as it is pulled (allowed) through the various restrictions of the inlet route, hence the compression ratio is reduced -even at full throttle. I would like to see some gas flow info on all of this...
In actual fact, you are creating a vacuum for the air at 15 PSI (atmospheric pressure) to be pushed into... you have to think of it backwards.. there is no such thing as suction.. you just create a gap and the surrounding pressure forces air in...

One other thought whilst on this topic.... Ram Air... like the Cerbies have a little scoop on the front to help force the air in.... I'm sure this must make a huge difference so has anyone tried it on a RV8?

Yes it gained 1hp
The main reason i did it is because the rubber felt a bit soft with the heat, imay of damaged rubber in time ..
and because it took you from 339.5 to 340bhp
