Anyone playing this awesome little indie game?

http://www.ftlgame.com/

Currently on Steam for £6. It's a rogue-like ship management game, with retro graphics and audio, but the gameplay is fantastic, been glued to it since yesterday, as have alot of people it seems.

Nice little overview here:

In short, if you like tactical, space-based games, get it.

It's about as basic as it gets, graphically, can't see it being a problem.

I've managed to put 12 hours into this so far (quiet weekend!) and I still keep going back to it. For £6, it's a steal.

I bought this Saturday morning, between then and now I've put in 14hours according to steam. Far to addictive.

I checked the forums, intel HD graphics are laggy as hell. May look fairly basic but it must use some DirectX stuff that intel HD doesn't fully support.

What an excellent game smile

I have got as far as sector 7, but most of the time never get to sector 5! Very frustrating but at the same time I keep going back...

I finally managed to complete this after 22 hours of gametime and god-knows-how-many replays.

Problem is, I want more! I want a free-form, Elite-style sandbox, with crew members who have levels and traits, upgradable ships, missions, trading and more depth. I need Elite: Dangerous and FTL to have a lovechild!

Picked this up for something like £2 from gog.com - Cracking little game although there are bits I'd change. I've given up taking risk on almost all away team style encounters as they invariably seem to end with me losing a crew member on nothing more than the roll of a dice, no skill involved.

Also learnt the hard way not to bother with transporters.. boarded enemy ship, then it jumped away.. down 2 crew frown

Is it possible to effectively capture a ship by taking out the o2 system and then waiting for its crew to die?

Boarding can be effective, but you need a good team - usually the Rock and Mantis types. You can keep the O2 disabled to kill the crew, yes - but it takes so long that it's easier just to destroy them.

Unfortunately, not capturing of ships is possible, I don't think you actually get any more resources from killing the crew than if you destroy the ship.

This is really addictive. Picked it up in the steam sale.

As stated above. Dice rolls make this hard. So easy to come up against a really tough ship who blows you apart as easily as you dispatch the fodder you come up against.

XCOM + FTL = Lovechild. Would also make a good game wink

Don't give up on boarding. Done properly it's one of the most useful attack methods. You need a crew and ship geared for it though. You get extra cash for killing the crew rather than destroying too.

Aim to have mantis or rocks for boarding.

It also makes the final boss much easier if you board correctly too.

There's a mod out there that removes the Rebel threat, allowing you to just roam each sector and explore. I played it with that for a while and it seemed much more enjoyable - the threat of death was still there and was actually increased because you visited more areas in each sector than you would if you were being chased.

It was a while ago I downloaded it but I'm sure I got it from the FTL mod database if anyone's interested in it.

Flagships not too bad if you're prepared. It's got a few surprises for you though, will take a few goes!
