So,

I have the urge to mod my immaculate 2001Y 450 final facelift Chim. Previous owner has sorted suspension and brakes and I have the urge for more power.

Do I ?

1 leave it ?

2 Fit electronic ignition system then a turbo ( will do in 2 separate stages to manage budget and girlfriend)

3 Sell it and by a Tuscan ?

I love the car it's looks and the way it sounds . Just know its not as fast as it could be ! Also want to keep it looking like an immaculate car not a track day thrasher !

Your thoughts ??

Don't mod it. If it's totaly original keep it as is. If you're thinking about a Tuscan then the Chim is obviously not a keeper for you, and you'll never get back what you spend on upgrades. It's easy (if a bit expensive) to make the Chim as fast as a Tuscan. The question you need to ask yourself is 'how fast do I want my TVR to be'. I have a 350 plus bhp Chim and it's not quick enough, I've bought a supercharger which will get fitted this winter... In just under two years the car stands me in at £23k, and thats before the SC.... My advice would be don't mod a mint TVR, buy a lesser one and mod to your hearts content....

Not only will you never get back what you paid for the upgrades, but you may even get less than you would for a car in original condition.

Its a good question. I am giving some serious thought to Eanns turbo kit. The good thing about this kit is that its essentially just a case of swapping the Y piece. Very easy to revert back to standard looking should you ever wish to sell.

As Chilli says, its a matter of how fast you want your car to be.

I'm very proud of my car but want it to be quicker as well . So surely its cheaper to run a modded minter than 2 cars ??

It really is a tough one. I've always thought my cars a keeper but had 4 chims in 10 years . I guess with this' one I'm thinking surely after mods it doesn't get much better ?

You're gonna do what you're gonna do wink Same as the rest of us, and we're all like minded here, ask for opinions then do what you wanted to do in the first place wink Right, mint 450? Supercharge it........ Simples biggrin

ETA: sorry, should have said MS2 then SC smile

My first Chim was a modded 500 and it scared me every time I took it out . Guess I want the same feeling with the pride of it looking like a garage queen !

Unless you are taking it on the track or the drag strip, you cannot use more than the standard power. I like track days, but my standard 400 has more talent than me, and there's less risk of it breaking through overstrain from mods. So mine is staying standard (with decent shocks!)

I think your mind is already made up wink Only question is which way to go with the mods... If you have the budget I would say go with the max... smooth bore inlet, bigger plenum, bigger trumpets etc etc is all very good, but I doubt those kind of mods will keep you happy for long. You mention turbo, and either that or SC is probably the only way that will give you the step change in performance that will make it worthwhile....... you won't recoupe the outlay if you sell the car, but it will put an everlasting grin on your face.... Good luck whichever way you go, and post what you're doing wink

Looking forward to an update smile Chilli...

Just giving the opposite view........but your mind is clearly made up, so your question should have been

"what mod?"

In which case Chilli is your man for good mods advice, as he is not one of the over the top brash brigade, but has a very nice, well sorted car and knows what he is talking about (except when he abuses me!). He's not forgiven me yet for overtaking him.

Ditch the TVR and buy a Mustang is surely not a better mod?

Get Eanns bolt on / bolt off turbo... car can be put back to std easy... its mental... you will never want any more power than it gives!... and you can sell the turbo on or fit to another V8 as you wish... also £ per BHP gain, its easily the cheapest option out there smile
also you can run it with your existing ECU and dizzy... so that upgrade could come after the Turbo.....

It's simple.

For every one of you that slaps a bunch of shiny new 'unnecessaries' onto a clean original car, then sells the original parts on to support the project; mine becomes worth a few pennies more.
Not that I have any plans to sell her after 13 years, but it does give me a warm feeling watching the value slowly climb back up.

Go for it evil

Let me get you straight on this one- You are saying you can swap the turbo unit in and out, yet retain the 14CUX ECU? So how do you cope with the different fueling requirements then? Dont try telling me that messing around with fuel pressure and the trying to alter the airflow scaling on the modified AFM is any where as good as either switching properly a modified map on a 14CUX, or even better an after market ECU system. And what about the main catalyst where the turbo is fitted? So you have to strip the turbo off each time you have an MOT? I wish Eann would drop onto this forum and discuss these things ... Dont you think there is a little over-hype here??

There probably is a touch of overhype and what you mention needs to be considered.

What is true is that for sensible money you get a well engineered kit that gives you the bang that is needed.

If people consider this as a starting point, add in MS or whatever and to fully comply, fit an after market cat, all will be rosey!

Eyes wide open and do your homework smile.
