I had one up until recently (upgraded it to a 100L) - great lens

You specified the L in the title.

Canon make an older non L 100mm macro and a newer L macro with IS (and weathersealing).

Optically there about the same. TBH you cant go wrong with it, excellent standard macro and great portrait lens.

L in Canon speak = luxury. Their more expensive lenses. They make two 100mm macro lenses. The L costs about £700, the non L costs about £400. The L is image stabilised, the non L isn't.

Canon also do an 'L' version of the 100mm which is image stabilised, a bit better built, a lot more expensive and produces very similar results

The 100L is excellent - you could question whether it is worth the extra over the non-L but if you can afford it then go for it you won't be sorry

thanks, I'm going to go for it - but only after I have a bit of a clear out - I keep "upgrading" but in then end keeping the older item so have quite a lot of Canon bits and pieces, think now is the time for a bit of consolidation (and of course then I can start buying more new toys ).

I have one, having bought it with the intention of doing some macro photography, but strangely have used it more for taking portraits. In either situation, it's a great lens.

I've had the non-L and non-IS version since 2007 and it's still my favourite lens.

It's brilliant. super sharp, IS can be useful. Apart from the price what's not to like?

I have the 100L IS version and it's a joy to use. Pin sharp, very fast accurate focusing and the colour and general image quality is fantastic. I also bought it with the idea of using the macro facility but it's such a nice lens I keep finding other things to use it for. It's also a refreshing change to use a prime lens and not have to constantly zoom.
