Hi all,
My boss has offered me my old works car which is an 06 Passat TDI (140)for a £1000.It would be a bargain except..... The reason it is so cheap is because it has a problem with the clutch/gearbox which is:- Sometimes, when the car is stationary and the clutch has been depressed it will not fully disengage to a point where it is not possible to move the gearbox into neutral without first turning off the engine. When the car is moving the clutch and gearbox work fine. It has has a new clutch and dual mass flywheel fitted and a replaement master and slave cylinder fitted but the problem is still there.
Has anyone come across this problem before? Need to know whether it is a £100 problem to fix or a £1500 problem to fix!
Also sometimes when released the clutch pedal does not return to its start position, it stops half way until your foot is taken off the accelerator when it will then return to it's starting point.

Had a similar fault with a couple of 2000cc tdi vw's which was related to excessive crankshaft endfloat, a very expensive fault to rectify.

Just to expand a little, endfloat on the crankshaft is where the crank is pushed a little bit forward when you press the clutch pedal. As you can imagine this is a Very Bad Thing.

Can you give me aan indication of how expensive it was to fix. My concern is, is it worth the greif with a car that's done 150K miles even if the rest of the car is sound - body in good condition etc.

Put replacement short blocks in rather than trying to repair the old ones short block from the dealer is @ 2k then labour, gaskets etc on top.
It can be checked at the front pulley without dismantling the engine by a competent mechanic.
Only other thing is this the transverse mounted engine?
