Oldies vs Moderns

Am thinking of buying a fun/weekend car with a budget of circa £15k - the moderns (ish) that spring to mind at this level or below are a Porsche 996 and Honda S2000 - I am looking for something that offers real driving pleasure and is v different from my everyday car (Diesel RR)
I lusted over the mazda engined MGB at Goodwood this weekend but at £50k it is well over budget - what sort of classics should I consider ?

I plan to sell My Elan Plus 2, and possibly even my Interceptor. Family crisis, I'm afraid, so a big clear out is in order. I have sold my Europa to a chap in Australia.

I shall put a PH classified ad for the Elan up later this week.

If you liked the MG LE50 at Goodwood but don't like the price tag (me too, btw), why not look at an RV8 or sorted MGB V8 conversion? Better still, a TVR Chimaera or Griffith. Proper Brit brawn!!

having had work done by that company I'm not sure I'd buy it if they gave me £50k to take it !

996 3.6 would be a great car at this budget. A good selection with choice of bodystyle (Cab/Coupe/Targa), auto/manual box, and all the trimmings you are used to such as remote locking, power steering, electric windows etc. You'll also have no trouble keeping up with much more modern stuff. Drive one, you'll be hooked.

911 really appeals in all it's guises - I have a bit of a soft spot for 964's and 996's

TVR Chimaera, good compromise between old and new

+1 on 911... I have a 964 and having owned several other classics i can say it is my favorite. A brilliant blend of usability and old and new. I know most prefer the 993 but this is the last real 911 for me. £15K will get you a good car but it won't be perfect, values have risen a lot recently and when I was looking I found mainly dogs at £12-14K level, good cars around 15-16K and really good ones go for £18k+. You will get a very good 996 for £15K or even less but is much more modern, bigger and quality is not the same. Extremely capable car but for me lack that 911 feeling.
