A friend has asked me to help him to purchase and set up a separates system.

The requirements are...

CD Player
Amplifier
Floorstanding speakers (For the living room)
Bookshelf speakers (For the kitchen)
Possibly a third set of speakers for the bedroom.

iPod connectivity.
No Wifi/Wireless equipment.
Digital radio will come from the BT Vision box already installed.

Budget is £1K.

Richer Sounds are selling this package for £800.
http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/...
Marantz PM6004 Amplifier
Marantz CD6004 CD Player
Tannoy V4 Floorstanding speakers.

Add these Tannoy Mercury Speakers for the kitchen. £100
http://www.richersounds.com/product/bookshelf-spea...

The Amplifier has two sets of speaker terminals, so would require a splitter switch for the third set of speakers
A set of Wharfdale Diamond for the bedroom. £50
http://www.richersounds.com/product/bookshelf-spea...
(Bedroom listening is really just for Radio 5 & TalkSport)

The CD player has a USB input for iPod/iPhone music input.

This only leaves £50 for interconnects & speaker cable. Hopefully the shop could do a deal on these, otherwise the third set of speakers will have to wait.

Another friend has the Marantz CD player and adores it.
I've always had NAD kit, but have had a couple of CD players and an old amp fail recently.

We are going to listen to it on Saturday morning.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for all, or part of this system?

Where did this detail come from? According to the Marantz website neither CD player nor amplifier have USB/iPod input.

Yes it does: http://www.marantz.co.uk/uk/Products/Pages/Product...

Only need one set of interconnects. No point spending daft money on speaker wire. £50 will be plenty.

Interesting reading. The specification tab states "USB Audio (Front)/Made for iPod/Works with iPhone 0/0/0"
I could not find mention of any sort of input however I had a closer look at the picture and there is a USB port on the front. I stand corrected.

I wonder how accurate the rest of the spec is?

Might need two phono interconnects - one for cd-amp & one for BT Vision box-amp.
Richer Sounds do them for a tenner.

Can anyone recommend a speaker cable splitter switch? I've seen them on eBay for a tenner.

That leaves £20 for 3 runs of speaker cable.

I reckon we can get this system sorted bang on budget!

Not much to add other than the Tannoy Mercury are lovely (mine run from a NAD amp), best to my ears than the others (cheap mission, wharefedale etc) I tried for that budget. Be absolutely ideal for a Kitchen - that is in fact what I reckon I'll do with mine soon, and get some floorstanders for my living room - and Tannoy will be my first choice.
