A chap on the Virage thread was wondering if his Dad might make a premium on the car if he sold it now (fat chance!). This got me thinking whether any PH'er has actually ever managed this and what were the circumstances if you did (car type etc.). To make life easy let's ignore inflation, which may bring a few long-term owners into the equation.

I think this only applies to the exotic cars, ie Lamborghini Aventador sells for a premium now, IIRC.
Zonda too, but when you sell your car to get a premium, you are a speculant, not a PH-er imho!

Do you mean brand new as in selling it with delivery miles or buying brand new and selling on for a profit after a while?

Are there not a largish number of PHers who are ex-964RS owners, all of whom seemed to sell theirs just before the prices went stupid?

As for new cars i know a girl who made £1500 on a MINI convertible when they were first released but that was the only brand new car i know of that made money.

Don't all car dealers sell brand new cars for more than they paid?

Rubbish business model otherwise.

More of the latter than the former, really, which is why I was thinking about very long-term owners, whose cars eventually became valuable classics for example.

I remember Sunday Times classifieds being full of speculators in 1989 offering "their" retail red Ferrari 328 GTS for sale at way above list price, long before it was actually delivered, but I'll take any true stories for the purpose of this thread!

We made £1,000 in a year on a Mini when they first came out in 02.

Apart from that your doing well these days if you can get a car that retains more than 65% of its value over 3 years.

I bought a new Capri 16GL in 1976 and sold it 2 years later for £200 more than I paid for it but in those 2 years the prices of new cars had increased considerably, probably by 50 to 75% iirc so second hand cars were doing well at the time.

Wife has been offered a fair bit more than she paid for her 1M twice in the last 2 months.

It's not for sale either and at least one of those offers was very genuine

Car is a year old eek

I made money on my 1M after 6months. Granted it wasn't a lot, though...

Ticket Price New: £40,900
Price Paid New: £38,000 after haggling discount
Sold for: £39,000 to a BMW dealer

I seem to remember anything with a waiting list in 1989 demanded a premium.

I did it with a Fiat 500 in late 2009. Would have made more if I hadn't ordered a couple of options that made no difference to the resale value mad

I also managed to made money on a Subaru Impreza Turbo back in the dim and distant past of 2000. Imported it from Holland brand new, kept it for 9 months and then punted it to a guy in the Isle of Man for more than I paid for it.

Always a nice feeling when you can do that. smile

Seems the UK market is slightly different than the Belgium market then!

I managed to sell my wked-out CRX for more money than I paid for it, my mates laughed behind my back saying that I would never manage it. I laughed in their faces after. hehe

Acquaintence recently said that they were being offered very toppy money for their Cayenne diesel from their dealer as the waiting list is long and people are impatient.

I remember a few poeple doing that with the MINI. I know somone who saw this so ordered two...only to get them delivered after the premiums had dropped off! I think he got most of his money back but not the profit he was hoping for.

My mortgage advisor is a very clever bloke - managed to sell his place on a waiting list, ie never even took delivery of the car, just sold his "build slot" - now that's a good way to make money if you can predict the market! Can't remember the car Bentley Conti GT maybe when those were new?

As alluded to above though, Monkey is a past master at this game.
