Want to build a Prototype - please tell me which one ?
Discussion
Hi guys,
I'm new one here, so please forgive for any mistakes.
Just come back from test drive of Radical SR3 on track. Wow, that was really good. Maybe not amazing, cause there was awful weather and slick tyres was really cold. But it was really worth it.
Right now I'm using my own Subaru Impreza GT with quite a lot of modifications on local track days. Since march was 12. Want to change something. There was an idea for EVO IX, but hey, that's still a normal car. Want something incredible. Of course, I'm not a multimillionaire and that's why I asking You for help and suggestions.
Ok, let's back to topic.
Want to build a Prototype track day car.
My requirements:
- prototype look
- low cost
- standard bike engine, with no extra modifications inside
- paddle shift gearbox (must be)
Usage:
- about 10 to 15 track days per year
- only on slick tyres
Right now I found: Radical SR3, BDN S3, Westfield XTR2. Unfortunately last one is out of production.
My questions are:
1) what kitcar do you suggest ? or know about any other models ?
2) how much cost complete kit ? WITHOUT rims, tyres, bike engine and workshop
3) what maintenance costs can I calculate per whole year ? what's included in it ?
4) how often should I change oil/filters ? and other parts too: brakes, discs, etc.
and special question to exact model:
5) can I use standard hayabusa engine for Radical SR3 and what results can I expect ? Huge difference ?
Know about Ultima GTR, but this I think is a different costs story, am I right ?
Thank you for any help !

There's also the Sabre by AB Performance. Andy Bates (The AB) is a leading authority on bike engined cars and worth a chat to.

There's also the new LMP style car from MK sportscars. First shown at Donnington show but don't think it's on their web site yet.

I don't think you going to find a car that is a lot better than you current one. Different this yes. How about a few very left field cars. Cars that would be very different and fun..

A Blackjack Zero, get a VW flat 4 engine and tune it to 250-400 BHP, (500 BHP is reach by some drag racing ones but they fit Turbos) and scare a few sevens.
Or a Classic Mini Marcos, in 1965 one finished at LeMans, last car to count as finishing, but it did count.
Have a look at this months Complete Kit Car front (before Friday), how about a Nemesis still sold from a based in Sri Lanka. I understand only a few ever sold.

I have remember seeing this at a show a few years back. I think it was called Minotaur kit and may be link to Pilgrim Cars.
As to that Ultima about £30,000 - 60,000 for a nice one.
I don't think any of these will appear to you, but think about having fun.

Are you saying that my Subaru Impreza GC8 is much better than Prototype Kit Cars ?I looking for 100% Track Day car. Must be super light, extremely fast and excellent in corners. Oh, price of building/buying is also a criterium. Three wheelers ? I don't think so, these are mostly good looking for me. Maybe nice handling, but this should be something on 4 wheels.
What can you say for kit cars with design similar to Lotus 7 ? Only meaning these ones with standard bike engines, cause a) buy costs, b) easy maintenance. Westfield Megablade, Mac1, MK Indy, found these ones on classifieds with bike engines. Are they worth money to be competitive with Lotus Elise S1 on track ?

In my experience, either the BEC would need the handbrake left on or the Elise to have a VERY good driver for there to be any "competition".SkyX said:

Well yes. In away it is. If you are just look for a track car a kit could be better, a strip out near race car. As an all round car... Well how many kit cars manufacture have the same resources as Subaru? I love kit car, but currently they are not trying to equal production cars. So yes your Subaru Impreza GC8 a better all round car. Which bit of this...

...or even the tread title, make you think he wants an all round car?

There's a 750MC race meeting on 7th October at Snetterton including the Bikesports championship. Plenty of examples to be seen, the Reynard Invertor is a good example (Yes, that Reynard).
Also there's the 750MC RGB championship which has similar prototypes. Scott Mittell has started producing kits for his car which has been doing rather well:

The Reynard invertor is not the heap that was made on the TV show fronted by Mark Reynard iirc.It is a proper aero track day car designed by the reknowned Adrian Reynard.
The rusting heap you are thinking of was called the Dominator.

Which is why the Sylva Phoenix/Fisher Fury has been dominant over the traditional 'Sevens' for so long in circuit racing, of course: it's essentially a particularly small, light 'Seven', but fitted with an aerodynamic bodyshell.
... though that dominance is well overdue to be broken. The design is quite basic and dated and mid-engined 'LMP' cars like the Spire and Eclipse SM1 are now showing the way forward.
So true, I did quite some tracktime with a high powered Caterham, ... though that dominance is well overdue to be broken. The design is quite basic and dated and mid-engined 'LMP' cars like the Spire and Eclipse SM1 are now showing the way forward.
have bought a XTR2 as new tracktoy and just testdrove on the track for a bit, not on the limit just playing a bit, and already 6 seconds faster than he fastest time with the caterham.
