Looking to the gamers on PH for some help...

I recently upgraded my PC for the first time in 6 years, so its now a really decent spec. I did this primarily for video editing, but I thought I'd try a game to see what the performance is like. I bought Battlefield 2: Bad Company and, rather irritatingly, really enjoyed it.

It had been years since I last played a FPS on the PC (Half Life 2), so I was very impressed by the look of a modern game. I've played BF2 through and I'm ready for something new - please help!

I'm not too fussed about multiplayer yet (getting blasted by everyone else gets frustrating after a while), so I'm after a good single player game.

Happy to try anything, although I'm not fussed about WoW-style fantasy games. Something modern or futuristic would suit best.

I know that many will say BF3, which I have on my list, but I was wondering whether anyone has enjoyed anything else recently.

Thanks for your help.

Deus Ex Human Revolution, stealthy futuristic and a hell of a lot of fun. Can be picked up cheaply and is one of the best games Ive played in the last couple of years.

Portal 2 - more puzzle than shooter but well worth your time and genuinely funny to boot.

Arma 1 or 2 if you want something more realistic, can be frustrating to pick up.

Bullet Storm - pure dumb arcade fun.

Team Fortress 2 - If you change your mind about multiplayer its free and about the best team shooter Ive played.

If you enjoyed BF BC2 Battlefield 3 has a reasonable single player campaign as well.

If you haven't played any of the last few call of duty games they won't seem as tired to you so may be worth a look.

Maybe take a look a Crysis 1 or 2 for shooters that well allow your PC to stretch it's legs a bit.

Great advice - thanks!

I've spent most of the evening looking through reviews and videos of the games suggested. Should probably go to bed now!

I think I'll go for Crysis 2 as a good single-player with great graphics. Once bored of that, it'll be time for BF3.

Not out for another two months but Black Ops 2 is looking promising from the trailers, at least moreso than the previous iterations..

I've been playing BF2 for the last 5 years. Only finally kicked the BF2 habit by buying BF3!

Get the first one first. Whilst not essential it helps with the story and makes the second more engaging. Otherwise it just becomes a pretty aliens invasion shooter.

Unreal tournament.

Oldie but good.

Probably won't need the new graphics kit though...

If you're just out for a single player experience, avoid BF3 like the plague, the campaign was a travesty, though the multiplayer is excellent, so I'd only buy it if you intend to play online.

I've played UT2003 and UT4. The graphics is pretty even on an old card but single player mode gets very samey.

Metro 2033 is really good, although its a few years old now and the graphics are nothing special, but gameplay is excellent.

I hated 2033. It wasn't a patch on the Stalker games. The lack of any free roaming coming from Stalker just felt poor. The first stalker was superb, the third one less so, but still good. Didn't play the second due to the reviews of stupidly unfair difficulty bugs.

If you aren't bothered about multiplayer and just want single player then avoid BF3 and Battlefield Bad Company type games. Too short, very linear with lots of uncontrollable cut scenes. Call of Duty is better but again very linear and short.

Look at games like Rage, Stalker, Fallout, Bioshock and Borderlands games that have more freedom to move about and are geared towards single player action and last much longer.

And as mentioned Black Mesa Source, which is free. smile

Far cry 2 is a good sandbox FPS although it does divide opinion quite severely. Some for the tasks are repetitive but for roaming around the plains and mountains of Africa it is quite a gem. Far cry 3 is due out soon and looks immense.
