Liftshare... sort of (advice please)

I've started liftsharing... except I'm the only one driving.
We've agreed (in principle) that the costs would be shared and I'd be paid once a week.

I'm collecting the other person from near their house (about 3 miles or so out of the way for me) and dropping them off again in the evening. We work in the same estate.
85mile round trip journey, mostly on motorway.

How should I calculate a fair charge?

All sensible advice and help appreciated.

50/50 if you want to be an ahole about it, I'd take a third of the costs though, if I was going to be doing the journey anyway and liked the person.

I would split fuel costs 50/50, as he is barely out of your way. you save half your costs. He gets a good deal, as he would have to pay to get to work anyway.

So both get a good deal.

Split the fuel 50/50.

He's not paying to maintain your car so it's more than fair that he only pays half the fuel.

Totally anal but you're still putting wear on tyres, brakes etc etc

Never met the person before but don't want to be an ahole either.
Currently costs them about £330 in public transport.

As above, never met before this morning. Introduced through a liftshare type site.

i've got too many stories from folk asking to liftshare and then take the piss. Getting rid of them is a lot harder.

How about using HMRC 45p per mile split 50/50?

This takes into account you're wear and tear, maintenance and insurance too. If the £330 is per week he'll still be quids in and the basis is HMRC approved figures.

Plus it's guaranteed that he'll mess you around eg.'I can't leave until 6 tonight is that OK?' so you need to be sure you're being compensated. BTW, I speak from experience.

Your proposal would cost £382 a month based on a 5 day working week. More than he's paying now. I agree though, make 100% sure the logistics work for you, these things are very easy to get in to but impossible to get out of!

What website are you using as Im Looking to share a commute to save some cash.

People are saying its had to get out once you commit, not really just tell them your hours have changed/ you can't lift share anymore due to other reasons and that's the end of it.

OP- I would do it at 25p per mile from when you pick him up. That's about £21 a day. If he doesn't like it, then let him carry on travelling via public transport. You are doing all of the driving, and it's your car that's taking all of the wear and tear. Basically, he's getting an easy life really.

One thing you could do actually, is fill your car to the brim on the Monday morning, then on the Friday (once near his house) he fills it up again. That way you would know how much the fuel costs for the week. Divide by two, and there you go.

Fuel 50/50, it's what I do and I lift my buddy 400 miles a week, you'd be doing the journey anyway

I was thinking along the lines of £35 to £40 a week.
If I need out, I get out. That's the attitude I'm taking.
However, it'll be nice to halve my fuel costs.

I did doubt that £330 per week thing (hence the exclamation marks).

I give someone from my work a lift on a semi-regular basis. It's also only about a 15 mile round trip. It's always me driving though which gives me the opportunity to dicate timings and availability. Be clear up front about payment and what happens when you're working different hours or unavailable and you should be fine.
