Well I've just got rid of my 54 plate Carrera 2 S one previous owner and in fantastic condition.
During the process which was just over a month ago one Jag main dealer (rip off merchant more like) sat there at his desk and told me that my car was worth no more than £14K!!!!!!!!
Needless to say I told him to put his "offer" where the sun don't shine, by the way the XKR is still for sale. I would not mind but he had a very similar car to mine but with double the mileage on sale at one of his dealerships for over £23K. The 996 is a great car and like you I don't understand why they are not seen for what they are - bloody brilliant. It must be something to do with it being the first of the new generation of water cooled models! Whatever the reason they are now looking to be great value for money and I can't recommend them highly enough.

Will be near as damnit the same. Electronics will put 95% of drive to the rear wheels for sure. I once achieved a genuine 40mpg in my 996 C4 over 100 miles at broadly 60mph just to prove a point.
mmm, 60 is not what I was thinking.
Real economy, normal, non-hoon mode?

not that it is vital, I don't do enough miles, but are we seeing 30mpg at 80mph?
Higher, but that's a carrera2

I would *need* a targa, and it seems they only come in 4s format?
How crippling is MPG in a Careers vs a Carrera4 at motorway cruising of 80 odd?
996 targas are ONLY 2 wheel drive .. mine averages 24mpg all driving, If you try to get more you should be driving another Marque

Apparently the car is going to a PHer in Hong Kong....slightly ironic given Dom has been working there & is now heading across the big pond to the US

Don't worry, it was a one off!

I was well impressed after a trip to the breakfast meet at Specialist Cars of Malton when heavy traffic on the motorway on the way home kept speeds down and we did 35mpg over 250 miles or so that day. I got 25 or so out of mine when it sat in traffic jams as a daily driver.

How queer! At least it is staying within the fold.

Best of luck to the new owner.

Almost as cheap as a leggy/no history 996 (which could still be construed as a good buy) so,with the work done, known history,seller...absolute steal!
Well done that man.

I'm pleased to say, it's me that won the auction. Think it'll be a great car and looking forward to getting my hands on it.

I think Dom was in Singapore, where the tax on a car is astronomical, which is what put him off taking it there. I'm in HK, where it's still silly, but much more reasonable than Sing.

I'm pleased by all the positive comments about the car. I've not seen it and only became aware f it through the other thread on here. Having done similar work to my 968 that Dom's done to this, and also owning a race car I know what's involved in getting a car to this spec. Think it should be lots of fun.

Really - why are the 996 so bargainous? simply misunderstood looks?
People repeat ad-nauseum that the headlights are different, and ignore everything that's good about the cars. Newbies pick up a feeling that there's "something wrong" with 996s and end up avoiding them. It's completely bonkers.

Best of luck Will, enjoy.

Anything planned for it while it's over in your care?

No plans at the moment. Just get it to Hong Kong and enjoy it. It would have cost a lot more here. A boggo, poorly maintained, with no service history, manual 996 here is about 25k - 30k GBP. After tax and import fees it will stand me at quite a lot more than the action closed at, but still a good worthwhile saving for a very nice car.

Nice one Will, hope you enjoy the new car. I was reading the thread thinking wow I missed a steal there only to read further down that you had bought it!

Hi guys... Firstly, I'm more than pleased that it's going to another PHer and there's some kind of strange poetry that it's heading off to Asia! I hope Will is pleased when he finally gets to see the car and it gives him many years of good service!

As for price... It looked like it was going for 10k until the last few minutes. It needed to be sold, is the simple answer. A thread on here asking what I should sell it for, literally, generated no ideas. It was always going to be difficult to sell with it being so 'unique'/ specialised as, at the end of the day, as nicely done and as well maintained as it was, it is a 'messed about with' version of a car that most people seem to believe blow up all the time.

Of course, hopefully by now we all know different but perception in the market is the way it is. Am I happy with the price? Well, considering I'll owe Autofarm a good few quid for 'preparing it' for sale, I'm taking home a fair bit less than eBay suggests, even. Honestly - at least it has sold, will be used and is going to a good home. We seem to be broke at the moment after a month stuck in hotels in London and all our moving expenses to the US, so the cash is important, today, and the car needs to be used.

The auction had over 150 watchers and plenty of page views - I really get the impression that if it was 'worth' more, it would have sold for more. How long would it have sat round in the classifieds at say 15k?

Good luck to Will and I hope you are more than happy! I think you've done well but we'll be back to the UK in a couple of years and I'll be building something else, no doubt!

Ed C... I doubt I need to make too educated a guess wink

In Houston now, buddy. Lots has changed since I last saw you! Saw Woody last week though...

Starting to now get the messages from people who would pay more for it! Does no one understand an auction!?
