We're just about to have building work started on our house creating a big open plan room at the back of the house, knocking through a couple of walls in the process. The proposed plans are as follows:

As you can see, I'm pretty good with paint wink and have added onto the plans where we are planning on putting the sofa (the red 'l' shaped box) and the tv (the blue box). My issue is how I get the rear surround speakers into a reasonable position.

SWMBO has only just been persuaded to embrace the 21st century and listen to films in 5.1, however in order to get 5 speakers into the house I had to do some serious bargaining so got the small sony golf ball sized speakers and an all in one package. Before you all start telling me that I need a separates system and a subwoofer that will make my nose bleed, I am well aware of this but am going for the slowly slowly catchee monkey approach. Currently the rear speakers are screwed to the wall at ear level and it works pretty well.

My next problem is 2 kids under 3 who spend much of their time jumping around on the sofa and putting everything into their mouths, so speakers on stands are going to add a level of excitement that I probably don't need...

Would screwing them to the wall at head height (standing not sitting) or onto the ceiling firing down work, or should I just admit defeat, move back to 2.1 and run cables into the ceiling void ready for when I can persuade her that a full B&W 5.1 system will make our life complete?

Not sure which wall you plan to screw them to?

If you could get one on the tiny piece of wall between the lounge window and what I think is the folding door, then you'd only need one on a stand at the opposite corner of the sofa.

My kids were told very early on that my surround speakers were not for touching, and only had to be *ahem* 'reinforced' once or twice before they got the message and now they leave them alone.

The front and centre speakers will be screwed to the wall, so they shouldn't be too much of a problem.

With regards to the rears, I was thinking that I could put one on the sliver or wall between the bifold and the window and the other on the piece of wall next to the doorway in from the hall. So they would fire sideways but at different distances from the sofa - would this cause too many problems.

I agree that big open plan rooms aren't ideal for audio, however a little planning now and running some wires should make life easier in the long run...
