Bought an S-Type Jag 2.7D 2004 a few months ago. Considering a change. Looking at buying a cheap track car for my PH fix and having something more...simple/lightweight/efficient for the commute.
Last year did about 18K
My calculations for this year show me doing a little less.
Use is 95% motorway, min 100 mile journeys.
Had a browse through the trader for ideas but all i'm seeing is Corsa, Astra, 307, various Kia and the odd Fiat. New Mini's I despise. the whole lot just empty my soul of any desire to drive them.
Should add i'm 6'3" so prefer a larger car. Had a Mondeo before which was great, did all I needed it to but i'm looking for something that will give a touch more driving enjoyment.

I'd say you'll get your driver enjoyment out of the cheap track day car. I can't really think of a car that will be an economical, comfy barge with added driver enjoyment without compromising the comfy bit which must be the important factor doing 100 mile motorway journeys consistently.
E46 320D/30D - more nimble, not all that comfortable
E39 530D - probably too similar to the Jag
Passat/Mondeo/A4 etc. probably less driver enjoyment than the Jag anyway

Hi. I'm slightly confused, are you looking for 2 vehicles for £5-7k? Or is this just the "simple/lightweight/efficient" car for the commute, or is it only one car you are after to fulfill both roles?Last year did about 18K

I'll trade in/sell the Jag and add a little cash to buy a 6K road car.
I have about £2K savings which I would use for a cheap (road legal) track car (thinking clio 172)
I've only have the Jag a few months and spent a long time decideing on the marque and model. Spent a long time finding the right one. Wanted something with enough power and prestige to bring a smile to my face.
Problem is, it's bloody heavy and although goes well, is a motorway luxobarge rather than a B road bullet. Even the 4.2 Supercharged petrol variants have a reputation for being fast in a straight line but not much about their cornering ability.
If I didn't have such a commute I'd have something ridiculously fun but the fact is I need to do those motorway miles. Doesn't need to be fast or even fun just comfortable and efficient.
The Mondeo though villified is a fantastic car and I may regret selling my last one.

Hmm, just doing some MPG calculations my currenct fuel cost is circa £3800pa at 18K.
Getting 40MPG in a petrol would come in about £2700
Getting 50MPH in a diesel would come in about £2300.
The purpose of this excersize is to reduce commuting cost to a minimum. I'll change the parameters and forgo any driving pleasure.
Do I just go with the smallest most efficient car I can find?
