Trying to remove the petrol pump from my knacker 2003 vectra.

Got to this now how do i unscrew/remove this to get to the petrol tank ?

I have tried tapping it anti clockwise with a screwdriver and hammer but didn't want to go to town on it just in case.

Going on appearances I would try clockwise, but I may very well be completely wrong.

Maybe it doesn't come across in the pics but the centre parts has the tabs raised to prevent clockwise turning.

Either continue to tap with a screw driver and hammer (but make sure you use a blunt edged one) or make a tool by taking two strips in metal and two long bolts and put it together like a ladder. You cam then tighten the bolta so it fits snug and then use more force to open.

Bend or break those tabs, and turn anticlockwise.

You can see the ramps on the inner bit that pushed the tabs out of the way, and a lock tab that will stop it from unscrewing.

I will give bending them a go.

Keep hitting it, i had to change the pump in my 2002 vectra DTi. mine was on real tight but i had a new seal kit which came with the new metal ring to re-seal it. So i abused it until it came off

Was yours under the rear seats ? petrol ones are. Did you have to bend the tabs out of the way ? can you remember which way you unscrewed it ?

If it's dead and you've got a replacement, just go to town on it. I wouldn't worry about snapping off tabs or bending parts it or whatever, as long as you only destroy the part you're replacing - that's my work ethic smile

Sharp punch, big hammer and a bucket underneath?

Or just unclip the hose and let the fuel pump do the work

If the car's is humped, then cut the fuel line under the bonnet, power up the pump and let the fuel pump into a jerry can or similar. Or as has been said, hole in the bottom of the tank. Can't see removing the pump backing draining it any easier unless you're going to siphon it out? On that note, petrol tastes slightly better then diesel...

Found a cheap drill pump for fuel, means I can pump from one car straight to the other, all I need to do is get this bloody thing off then I can flog the car for spares or repair minus the easily sellable bits.

Some cars don't run their pump for more than a few seconds at full pace as they assume (correctly) there must be a leak somewhere and it won't get every last bit out.

Electric fuel pumps will only "prime" for a few seconds when the ign is turned on, after that they need a trigger signal from the coil firing so it needs to be running or cranking over, or as i do just run a live from the/a battery to the pump and let it pump the tank dry wink
