Why so much grit on the road?

I'm not going to rant, but after going painfully slow through a silly road resurfacing section this morning, I was greeted to this in the next village.

Anyone else noticed grit already? Haven't even had chance to give the wheel arches some proper winter protection yet!

It's so they can use it all up before we need it. Then when it's snowy/Icy they won't have to go out in the tretureous conditions to grit he roads.

Not a bad idea, but it was quite evenly scattered up the road until this point when it just went nuts.

Spinner has probably been turned off but the auger hasn't and as already mentioned, probably a diesel spillage which also means its only sand.
