How do i tax my car ?

So i have just bought a car off a mate of mine and need to tax it, however he only has the V5 green slip in his name as he bought the car a week ago before selling it on to me. Obviously cant do it online and the post office needs the V5/ greenslip to be in my name. Mate cant do it as he has no insurance for the car. V5 is away with the Dvla so could take a couple of weeks. Any suggestions ?
