Right I'm sat in a server room bored so start scanning through PH about stuff and start reading about bmw's new 3 cyl engines and Fords new 3 cyl ecoboost and I myself own a 5 cyl be transporter and have had 5 cyl Audi's etc but it occurred to me that with the imbalance in odd cylinder numbers is that why there are no 7,9 or 11 cyl engines? Is it to much imbalance with anything bigger than 5....

Inline 7s and 9s do exist, according to wikipedia, but only in diesels for boats and machinery etc.

Because usually the odd number cylinder cars are inline (bar VWs V5).

3 cyl inline is a little engine, 5 cyl inline is shorter than a straight six - anything bigger and you may as well fit a shorter V8, V10 or V12 for packaging reasons.
