Pipeline Engineering
Discussion
Hello People
I've been reading this forum for some time but hadn't registered until recently. I wanted to get some advice from Engineers in the Oil&Gas industry.
I'm currently working in an R&D role in a small company for the power generation sector. I am looking to get my foot into the Oil&Gas industry and work in the Pipeline Engineering field. It's a field which I have an extreme interest in and want to specialize in.
My problem is how do I go about getting my foot into this field. One route would be to do an MSc but even then I'm not sure if that is the best route to go down. I would prefer to get experience on the job and learn that way but a lot of the jobs I've seen are for experienced candidates and are pitched at senior level.
Do any people here work in this field or in Subsea Engineering that could give advise as to how to go about getting a role in this field and how the job market is doing currently?
Just to add, I'm 28 years old and have a Masters Degree in Engineering.

Going on some courses with people like Jee http://www.jee.co.uk/ would be a good starte. They are very well respected but not cheap. Then apply at the usual pipeline installation companies such as Technip, Saipem, Subsea 7, Allseas etc. I don't think you would have much chance at an operators without experience though. The installation contractors are all desperate for people at the moment as there is such a shortage of Subsea Engineers across the board and a lot of companies are taking on Engineers with other backgrounds and putting them through a conversion coarse so probably a good time to give it a go.

Hi cerbfanThe installation contractors have jobs for Subsea Pipeline Engineer advertised on their websites but they specify experience is needed. If I apply for these jobs, I was under the impression that they would probably bin my CV if I don't have relevant experience. So should I apply for these jobs and hope that I get a job and they put me through a conversion course?

Hi Anthony,I would appreciate if you could find out what your wife's company look for from candidates who are looking to move into pipeline engineering but without the relevant experience.

Hello Guys, I am currently in a similar situation.
I am considering going for my Masters in one of the above specialties this September,I will like to get some advice from engineers working in the Oil & Gas Industry.
I have a BEng and currently work as a Non-Destructive Testing Tech (NDT) for an Inspection company. My job has been mainly carrying out inspections & testings on Subsea components like Stab-plate Jumpers, BOP and Manifolds, recently some pipeline inspections as well.
I have a big interest in the O&G industry and will like to move into Pipeline section of it maybe in the future become a Subsea Pipeline engineer.
My problem is will a Msc in Pipeline engineering be a better choice for me in terms of my future goal and will my NDT experience coupled with the Msc help me stand out. I feel Subsea engineering sounds a little bit sophisticated if I haven't got much experience to back it up with.
I will appreciate it if anyone currently in the industry could share or advise on how best to go about it and how the job market is as well.
