Giving the old girl a good underbody wash down this morning and I noticed some big cast slabs hanging down just in from of the rear bumper, what are they?

My guess is some sort of pendulum for the off road system sensors?

Thanks

Seen them mentioned elsewhere, believe they are a harmonic damper of some sort.

NVH

They're harmonic dampers...

You've got body-chassis dampers too. On the front they're hidden behind the inner wheel arches unless you've had the mod - in which case, you'll have had weights fitted to your front end too! smile

Yep, mass dampers. Usually added when a manufacturer has found a resonance issue late on in the design process.

Incidentally the ones on the RRS are so large that they had to upgrade the production line to transport them as they're over the maximum handling weight limit (i.e. a production bod can't lift it). I think they're about 36 kilos apiece...

Indeed but it wouldn't necessarily remove things like this...

NVH issues don't really get discovered until late in the design process, when testing prototypes. At which point, it'll be too late to go back & re-design things, so weights are added to dampen instead.
