My Griff has been pinking a little in the warm air under hard acceleration. I've had the air intake hosey thing insulated to try and stop the air being heated up too much by the manifold.
I have had all the timing checked, nothing wrong there.
I was wondering how many other people's cars pink, maybe it's time to pop down to halfords and get some octane booster.

I also have got a pink on Optimax only happens on hard acceleration about 4000rpm.

If you find a cure please let me know, this might help you on the Distributer the vacumn advance (disc shape where the black pipe gopes on )sometimes comes loose and apparently this can cause pinking, this was ok on mine but you never know !

Keep me informed and especially if the octane booster sorts it

.......so does mine.

Runs optimax and I have retarded the ignition slightly. I have run O.Booster in the past and it did stop it but not a cure I'm happy with.

Noticed a while back, Mark Adams had 3 500's in for work, all were running weak and had ign retarded. So my next plan of attack is to get the injectors ultrasonically cleaned....

I will keep you informed. Just got some booster from halfords, nearly got the wrong stuff though, some of it you can't use with cats.
Also, the stuff I got goes in with a full tank of petrol and works out to be 10p a litre more on fuel.

If you're serious, I have a set that not only have been cleaned, but matched to within 3% (can be 10% out of the box, believe it or not). Yours for £150 + delivery. Will fit them, if you need it.

It only does now after I have waited for several minutes in warm wetter for a trafficlight. Driving the car for long times with only minimal (1200) revs will produce pinking as the flow of coolant through the engine is to low. A bottle of Water Wetter will help to reduce pinking.
You may have trapped air in the radiator.

Come to think of it, it has only started pinking since it had a 12k service 2 months ago.
They said that it was the warm weather, but it didn't pink last summer and that was a real hot one.

Hi Phil, the 4* jungle juice can be purchased at the 'Devils Corner Garage'. This is on the dreaded A140 just prior (300 yards) to the Eye turn off. I use Opti myself but as you may be passing along may be handy to know about.

Funny as I am having the same problem with my 92 pre cat, albeit fairly intermittently. I spoke to D batty who services it and said although in the long run it can be damaging to the engine as long as I am not on a track submitting the engine to extremes, it is something that can wait until next service. As suspected the best solution will be to retard the ignition slightly....

Yes - super for preference, normal + octane booster if that's all that's available. Previous owner ran it exclusively on Optimax.

hang on a mo....could I use 4* in my 98 Griff then, or is it just the older cars that can use that stuff?
Opti is difficult to source round by me.....

I think you have to use unleaded fuel because 4* damages the cats.

Thanks Groucho, that's what I thought....the reason I asked is that I asked in the local garage if they sold super u/l and the guy just pointed at the 4* LRP pump Glad I didn't put any in!!!

I think you should be okay with LRP, as it's not actually 4*.

4* is leaded fuel, I'm not quite sure what kind of additive LRP has. It stands for (I'm sure you know) Lead Replacement Petrol.
The handbook says always use unleaded fuel, I really don't know if that includes LRP. I wouldn't risk it.

I've found a little info on the matter.

www.fizzindi.demon.co.uk/lrp.htm

I don't think I would use it, you know the old saying.
Better to be safe than sorry.

Runs a dream on the stuff - I don't use anything else if I can avoid it. I did have a friend tweaker play with the car (ignition mapping, I think) just after I got it, which upped the power. Other than that it's a stock 5.0 HC.

Runs noticably better than any other "Super" I can get, which is usually only 97 Octane. Uses less juice, and is sprightlier (on the Optimax). On longish motorway drives, get more miles per pound from the more pricey Optimax.

BTW - if you've got cats, NEVER put LRP in the tank. If you're using an octane booster, double check that it's cat-friendly.
